Nobodies: After Death is the second game in the Nobodies series, and has maintained its unique flare. I adored the original, and this sequel manages to expand on its gameplay elements, whilst its core formula remains mostly untouched. It is a fantastic, cheeky and fun murder-cleaner-puzzler, all wrapped up with point and click gameplay, what a concept!

Pros
  • 13 varied missions
  • Unique concept – Hide the evidence!
  • Fully voice-acted with amusing dialogue
  • Multiple approaches, only one solution
  • Challenging puzzles & tasks
  • Useful mission select
  • Handy hint system if needed
Cons
  • Controls / hotspots can be a tad clunky
  • Extended silence during missions where the soundtrack ceases

Story
Taking on the role of a “cleaner” for an ultra-secret intelligence agency, you play as Agent 1080. You reach murder scenes after the murder has already taken place… and you clean it up! Hide the body by any ridiculous means possible, cover your tracks by putting items back exactly where you found them, but be careful others do not spot you holding a dead body, or it is game over. There is a small narrative for the game, conveyed through mission briefings at the beginning of levels, this explains the “targets” and their role in the operation as a whole.

Gameplay
After the mission briefing, Agent 1080 arrives straight into the field. The game features point & click gameplay and arrows on each scene are used to navigate the areas (or an interactive map that allows fast-travel). Upon arriving at the scene, your work begins instantly, and the difficulty slowly ramps up as the missions continue. Starting with only small areas of 1-2 different scenes to explore per mission, this can ramp up to 8+.

Scan the rooms to find useful items, with voiced dialogue on every interactive object too. Complete standard inventory-based puzzles to combine items, or more complex puzzles that require multiple different steps such as combinations of lights to shine the correct path on a map. Be careful to not pick up the dead body and carry it through the streets, this will result in an instant mission failure (but has no real consequences, it will just restart from just before the point where you took the body out into the open). The game rewards creative thinking and planning, and sometimes you must plan many steps ahead. There are no time constraints or changing AI walking patterns to memorise, simply go at your own speed. This creates a casual game to enjoy, where you can hide the bodies in peace, or pieces…

During the final missions, the difficulty can become overwhelming, with a full inventory and multiple scenes to examine, it can be confusing what to do next. Luckily, unlike the first game, there is a particularly useful hint system. Simply click on the mobile phone to see a hint on what to do next. There is no cooldown feature or point system, and the game does not discipline players for using it (however there is an achievement correlated to never using hints). Usually, the hints were very straight forward and helped push me in the right direction, and I would not need to spam it further for more guidance. However, I understand that some players may only want a small hint, and not a full solution such as “go here, pick up x item.” If this may bother you, I recommend steering away from the hints entirely, unless absolutely stuck, as it is forthcoming with information.

Note: I have read in other reviews that the hint option was easy to accidentally miss-click. This seems to have been updated since, and now there is a warning “are you sure you want to see a hint” or something akin to this. Meaning if you accidentally click it (as it is beside the map and inventory), there is another prompt to stop you. This is only relevant for achievement hunters going for the Hint Hater achievement.

Cleaning up the scene
I enjoyed that the levels do not end once you have hidden the body. No, that is only 50% of your task. You are a cleaner after all! Players must place back every single item they used in their original locations, close doors of cabinets or bins opened, mop up blood and leave NO traces you were ever there. It is quite easy to forget something, such as re-locking a door that you unlocked. Whilst you can still end the mission with not having done this, you will not get the 100% clear and related mission achievement. However, due to the handy mission select, you can always go back and put items back without replaying the entire mission. Although, if you have locked the keys in a room, and you need to enter that room to put back another item, you will need to restart.

Visuals & Sound
Nobodies: After Death features over one hundred hand-drawn scenes which are all beautifully vibrant and are a large improvement on the 2019 original game.

Agent 1080 is fully voiced and has short interaction with other characters. He voices his thoughts on all items selected in a scene and has an amusing sense of humour in his interactions. Once a body is a hidden, a crescendo of sounds, akin to “spy music” plays to give a sense of victory and triumph. This was always a relief, knowing I had reached the end, now only having to neatly place back everything I had touched. However, the soundtrack seemed to abruptly end in many places throughout the game, leaving only dead silence in its wake. Given that the game has its quirky humour splattered throughout it, and a very casual atmosphere, the silence seemed out of place and was noticeable. It seems linked with the amount of time taken in one scene, with long pauses resulting in extended periods of silence. Whilst this is not a large issue, it would be beneficial to have at least something playing in the background during the missions.

Technical & Stats
This game was played using mouse only, and with the following PC specs.:
AMD Ryzen R5 7600x 5.4 GHz
32GB DDR5 5200 CL36 RAM
Radeon RX 6800 XT
2560x1440 resolution
NVMe 3.0 SSD
Windows 10

Bugs & Issues: Minor clunky controls, having to constantly select the item in the inventory to use it, there is no way of “locking” that specific item in use. Sometimes there were issues with hotspots, and it was difficult to place items back on the ground where they were found.

Playtime: Took me 6.5 hours with 100% achievements (guide used for achievements).

Controller Recommended? No, it is point & click.

Replayability value: No, not once 100% achievements are obtained.

Conclusion
Nobodies: After Death is a fantastic Indie game that has plenty to offer point & click fans. Its unique premise of being a “murder-cleaner” and cleaning up crime-scenes, whilst maintaining its light, humorous atmosphere is one-of-a-kind. I absolutely adored the first game, and this sequel maintains all its great elements, but expands upon them. If you enjoyed the original, or find the concept intriguing, you are sure to love this.

Ok, I had my eyes on the first one for a while but now the second one is here, too. Great for a “murder-cleaner” binging. Or murder cleaning as a spring cleaning :mamiyasociety: Thanks, Cookies, for reviewing and reminding me of these gems ;)
