My name is Vito Scalletta. I was born in Sicily in 1925. I'm standing with my parents and my sister Francesca, in front of our old house. I don't remember much about those times, except that life was hard, and then my father decided it was time for us to leave. To leave Sicily. To cross the ocean and start a new life in America. I've never seen anything like Empire Bay in my life. He was wonderful. However, it's hard to imagine anything worse and more disgusting than our new shack. The "American Dream" was more like a nightmare. My father started working at the port for the man who brought us here. He worked tirelessly, earning a meager income, which he almost entirely spent in the tavern. Eventually, I was enrolled in school. I needed to learn English, but there was no way I could speak it with the Italians. That's where I met Joe. Over time, we became best friends. We both had nothing in our pockets, and we didn't have a decent job, so we started our own small business. Well, we weren't very lucky. It was 1943, and the war was going on. We needed Italian-speaking soldiers to land in Sicily. I was eighteen, and I didn't want to go to prison. Who said you couldn't go back to your homeland?
