Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore is a fun fantasy-action 2D game which contains a lot of references to the iconic CD-I games, which, due to their infamous cutscenes, literally constituted the main content of the early Youtube and beyond.
The game system mimics the CD-I game system and therefore it is rather simplistic, at least on keyboard. The basic controls are quite easy to learn, and as the game progresses and new skills unlock, the controls are familiar enough for the player to perform advanced movements in levels.
The story of Arzette is basically a generic fantasy story: a dark lord called Daimur, who was once sealed in a magic book, is released by one of his henchmen, and as he and his minions start causing havoc in Faramore, Princess Arzette has to take down Daimur and save the kingdom. Most of the existing characters in the game offer some humor and references to the classic CD-I games, and some of them offer you helpful rewards like tools and skills after completing specific sidequests.
Personally, I think Arzette is more like a great tribute to the CD-I games; from the first cutscenes alone the game makes it openly clear where its sources of inspiration come from. Overall, the game is not that amazing or it doesn’t actually try to pretend being like that. It is a fun fantasy game which can be an enjoyable experience for new and older CD-I fans, and it offers decent challenges for regular gamers and 2D speedrunners.
I recommend this game for average 2009 enjoyers.
