Really good! Anyone whining probably hasn't been playing as long as they say they have, because this is pretty much peak FFXIV in every meaningful way. Wuk Lamat's story mirrors the Champion of Eorzea, and the whole expansion /just/ feels like FFXIV's greatest hits. There are low stakes in the beginning, but the whole of the expansion explodes very quickly.

If you like FFXIV, you'll love this expansion. The circlejerk has decided this one isn't good because you have to talk with a single NPC multiple times. Must've skipped that whole part where we returned to the Waking Sands about a hundred times.

I find this game to be ridiculously fun. Most of the initial issues I had with it are more or less skill related, but the one criticism I have for it is that player-based AoEs (unless they're circle spread markers) suffer from some visual clarity issues.

You can change the marker colors to be mostly contrasted against the stage and have that be relatively consistent, but I *think* there are still some artistic decisions made in the final section of the final area that override that setting.

As for what I like about the game, it's an absolute blast if you like Bullet Hell games at all, and I'd be willing to say that Hard and lower difficulties are a good introduction to the genre, while people coming in from one of its obvious inspirations, Final Fantasy XIV, will be right at home dealing with the chaotic-until-muscle-memory fight designs.

Trash bosses have at least two different variations in their fights, while area bosses and their mini-bosses (at least on Hard and lower difficulties) seem to have more set in stone mechanical progression. I admit that most of my time in this game has been on the Hard difficulty while we grind out that muscle memory, so I wouldn't be surprised if your experience varies from mine.

As a roguelike(-lite?) there are very minor elements of meta progression, but these are in the form of trinkets that have no real bearing on the game as a whole, and at best may assist you in remembering a single aspect of your class. Stuff that would come with playing normally anyways.

You can also unlock additional characters as you fight through the major Area bosses, either through beating a number of them or by finishing an area on a certain difficulty.

I highly recommend.

highly recommend, servers are a little unstable at launch, but issues like that only happen uncommonly enough that you can get a long streak of solid games.
