It's a damn shame Palworld came out when it did. This game is really good.

I don't review games. I don't buy Early Access. I don't play survival games. This game has me breaking all of those rules.

Somehow, this game is a mix between traditional survival games, such as Rust or Minecraft, and roleplaying games, like Runescape or Skyrim. The first few hours are stereotypical. You scrounge around looking for resources as you attempt to build your first shelter. You seek to survive, but also thrive. It's in these first few hours that you learn just how harsh this world can be. Many players die early to things that might seem innocuous in other games but that pose a very real threat in Valheim, such as falling logs or smoke inhalation.

Once you get your feet under you, it's time to start exploring. This is where the game truly opens up. New resources unlock new crafting recipes, enabling you to further develop your skills and expand your operations. The world is absolutely rich with things to see and do. You might explore crypts, take to the seas, or get smashed by a troll sneaking up behind you as you harvest blueberries.

The game is not without its faults, although most are technical in nature and expected in an Early Access title. Optimization is desperately needed, as performance tends to dip as more of the world is explored and modified, though it doesn't make the game unplayable.

All-in-all, this is one of the best Early Access titles I've played, and it is certainly one of the best games in its genre I've experienced. I plan to play for many hours more.

I have been on Steam for 7 years and have never left a review of a game that I liked or disliked. It never seemed worth my time to do so. Then, along came No Man's Sky.

Do not buy this game.

For starters, games should be priced based on development and marketing costs, not perceived "goodness" of the game. Hello Games could have spent an additional 10 years developing this game and it still would not be worth the $60 price tag, regardless of how good the final product ended up being. The size of the studio and lack of artists and level designers required to develop this product simply do not warrant a $60 cost.

Then there's the aspect of false advertising. Do not attempt to refute this claim. It is simply a fact. The game is not as was advertised. The game is missing so many features that were talked about in interviews, shown in trailers, screen shots, pre-release gameplay footage, nothing. Maybe 20% of what we've seen before is actually in the game, but it has been dumbed down and hollowed out to be nothing more than a tech demo.

Finally, the game is extremely poorly optimized for PC. Running the game on low settings while sporting a machine that clearly exceeds the minimum requirements will still cause constant FPS drop issues. Frequent crashes and an in-ability to restore the window from being minimized make trying to run the game a chore itself.

This game had the potential to be what they said it would, but don't buy it and have it sit in your library unpaid until it reaches that point (if ever). Steer clear of No Man's Sky.
