BLUEBERRY CHEESE BROWNIE

Alright, so Grasshopper Manufacture's NMH series is crass and extremely stupid, but very fun. The combat on controller is kind of awkward but not terrible (that being said, it's clear from the get-go that it was designed with motion controls in mind, and I think the QTEs using the right stick makes this glaringly obvious -- they cause fatigue relatively quickly and are somewhat worse than button prompt QTEs).

The game has not aged particularly well, but you're probably aware of its age going in, assuming you're a longtime Suda51 fan.

The game has v-sync forced on without any way to disable it (as far as I'm aware of), at least one song has been removed due to a lapse in licensing (this was the issue with the old PS3 version of this game), the audio distorts often, at least during the first boss fight, and there's no way to change the resolution of the textures in-game, resulting in some pretty blurry and artifact-filled jpegs that are occasionally stretched due to the new aspect ratio.

I don't know if the issues here will be fixed, considering Grasshopper Manufacture is a relatively small studio with a finite source of money, and the company that did the port were likely contracted out for a quick release before the new No More Heroes game comes out.

Be cautious if you're considering purchasing. I'll update the review if people are able to figure out how to fiddle with the PC settings and fix some of the aforementioned problems.

The new game in the "sensory violence" genre, Cruelty Squad is essentially a sandbox stealth/tactical shooter game with heavy emphasis on comedy as well as post-ironic takes on the service industry and the culture of capitalism. Heavily postmodern and stripped down to its bare essentials, you can expect a significant amount of secrets and side content, bizarre humor, raw body horror, and a lingering feeling of dread throughout.

It's the most tense Resident Evil game since RE7 (including the remakes).

The graphics are insanely good and the art direction is industry-leading.
The gunplay is better than RE7's and tries desperately to cash in on the RE4 nostalgia, which I think holds it back from becoming something truly unique. I enjoyed most of my time with it and I think it's mostly superior to RE7, which was my favorite horror game for years.

That being said, it's so stupid and poorly written that the last hour or so actually infuriated me.
It's super plot heavy without having any decent writers on the staff. It's actually comical how juvenile it is.

Buy it for the gameplay, the fun scares, creative puzzles, and the depth of the map design.
Don't buy it if you're expecting a well-written or clever ending to the RE7 narrative. Its themes are about as subtle as being kicked in the balls and the plot twists don't make any sense.

Was able to complete both parts of the demo. Reminds me of RE7 with RE4 action -- it's legitimately very tense when it needs to be (especially the Castle demo once you get underground), while also being kind of kitschy and very fun.

watch all your best men die because they missed a 90% shot at point blank range and the enemy can infinitely spawn massive mecha reinforcements, get angry at RNG and dumb luck

legitimately very fun with friends, but the shift towards action makes the game a lot less tense and a lot more boring. the weapon crafting system is interesting at times, but is simultaneously very confusing and not particularly intuitive. also, it seems like there is very little difference between normal and hard difficulty outside of instant kills, which is lame. some of the objectives are difficult to parse and the map layout can be confusing and at times even disorienting, with your directional navigation system getting confused and telling you to stand in an elevator that you just got out of, then correcting itself a minute later.

combat is pretty fun though and it's fun as hell with a friend.
