A crazy improvement from the mess it released as in 2016, all at no additional cost. 8 years of free support for a game is very rare, and this one deserves praise for that.

Great benchmarking tool, very customizable. Only thing I dislike is the "DLC" business model, but prices are affordable for people who build PCs good enough to warrant buying them

A really good space 4X with RTS elements. The amazing mod support makes sure the game never gets stale.
There are some issues with the "AI" (not sure I can call it AI when there's no intelligence there), and late game performance is still pretty bad, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the game.
If you don't mind the Paradox DLC strategy, then I highly recommend giving the game a try. The, Leviathans, Utopia and Apocalypse DLCs are all must-have, in my opinion. If you can, also get all the other DLCs that aren't species packs, as they add some flavour to the game. Finally, get the species pack if you really want those different species, just be mindful that they don't add any different gameplay

A very well designed space RTS that is still getting updates after a decade. Performance slowly degrades as you play along and players get larger fleets and colonies, but that is to be expected and a mid range PC shouldn't complain too much.
There are also very good mods for this game out there that convert it into the most popular Sci-Fi franchises, worth checking out if that's your sort of thing.

The developers keep introducing shiny new content to attract new players and then abandon it when they start working on something else. Don't get me wrong, the new content is interesting and all. Fortuna update dropped recently, and we can already see how they're kind of ignoring the Plains, their other open world area

May 2020 edit: Same exact opinion on the game. Release new buggy content, fix it for a bit, ignore it exists after next big content drop. I keep coming back to see if it's worth investing my time into playing again, and the answer is always no

Introduction:
When I bought this game on a Steam Sale, I didn't expect much from it. I figured I'd play a few hours and be done. Boy, was I wrong; this turned out to be the best way I ever spent 2.50€.

Review:
The big (FREE) updates Terraria keeps getting just blow my mind, I didn't think there were devs and publishers like that anymore. Just vanilla content will make you spend hours upon hours getting immersed in this world, but if you factor in the modding community this has endless potential.
The game mechanics seem to all be in a great place, and while the challenge of fighting enemies could be about their AI instead of raw stats, it is still very fun fighting off hordes of angry pirates and such. On the player's side there is enough variety that you can have more than 6 players each using different styles of combat. There may only be 4 main classes (5 if you count thrown weapons), but the different ways weapons in the same class behave make for tons of possible loadouts.
Other mechanics:
Wiring got a lot better in the wiring update. Now it is easy planning and building giant contraptions, especially since you can now manipulate every wire in your screen without having to move.
Building is tons of fun, but I'm not very design-focused so I'm not the best person to give my opinion on this. Nevertheless, there are so many different blocks that you can then paint with colors and patterns that if you're creative you will never run out of ways to bring your ideas to life.
Inventory management, as a result of the sheer amount of items in-game, is the biggest mess you can think of. Along the years they have made it easier, since now you can sort items in inventories and auto-store items in nearby chests that already have some. My reccomendation is that you start building a very big chest room ASAP, especially if you want to collect one of every item in the game.
Lorewise there isn't much of anything. You could always consider reading every NPC line, but you won't get anything substantial ingame.
About the bossfights, most of them are pretty engaging and if you decide to take them on without any special strategy you will have a hard but great time. Some of them do have repetitive AI, but playing on expert does give them new moves (which kill you even faster).

Conclusion:
Get this game if you haven't already and have friends who are interested in playing this. Just don't try starting on expert hardcore or you might ragequit after the first 10 minutes :)
I don't like giving scores, but this is one of the exceptions where I just have to give it a 11/10

End of 2021 update: Still getting free content updates. There's truly no equal

Early Access Review
How a game that's not being worked on is still on sale as early access is beyond me

A total grindfest, overpriced microtransactions, and now Take Two has confirmed that they hate mods, even when they increase the visibility of the game. Funny how the only time I considered leaving a positive review was a month after the launch of this game

EDIT: They have since gone back and allowed OpenIV to exist. I will remove this review for a proper one once I see they intend on keeping their promise
