I wanted to like this game, but even though I tend to like slower paced story games this one I just found frustrating. There is little explanation of anything, which is good in some aspects like atmosphere, but horrible in others. For example, I was convinced I'd have to feed the goats because a goat started displaying a symbol that looked like hay bales despite the fact that I had a huge pile of hay bales in their pen. So I tried to figure out how to feed the hay bales to them and nothing worked. The answer? The goat was just wandering too far away and was too stupid to find its way back to eat.

Another annoyance: I was making cheese and suddenly she gets hungry and tells me she'll have to eat before she can work more. So I go into the house and eat, then go back to the cheese and get through one click before she tells me she has to eat again. After looking on the discussions I find that some food is "worth" more than others, but there's no ingame explanation for this. Not even a hunger meter to show you how hungry she is until you slowly walk into the house, slowly cook your food, slowly walk out of the house, slowly walk back to wherever you were trying to do something, and slowly try to attempt it again only for her to say she's still too hungry.

This game has scratched an itch I didn't know I had. The dev has been very responsive with frequent updates since release responding to feedback and fixing bugs.

It was cute. The art is good, the story is goofy, overall I had fun. Took me about an hour and a half to finish the game.

Fantastic hacking sim. Different paths for different personalities as well.

Beautiful game aesthetically, but the puzzle difficulty very quickly becomes overly obtuse and difficult to decipher, to the point of not being rewarding.

Within the first two days of owning this game, I put in over 30 hours of gameplay. There is so much to do and see! I'm in summer of year 2 and there's still mysteries and things I hadn't noticed before, places I haven't unlocked, relationships I haven't had a chance to raise, collections I haven't completed... etc. I can easily see myself eventually putting in 500+ hours into this game.

I couldn't recommend this game any more highly. Also, get the soundtrack, it's amazing.

EDIT: Since writing this review, Aseprite has become my primary pixel art program! They've implemented a color picker similar to the style I prefer, which was my main limiting factor before. Now my only wishlist is to have multiple windows open so I can have a reference picture and the art I'm working on both visible at the same time, though that can be mitigated with multiple monitors.

Original review:

I've been making pixel art for over ten years now, most of which was using Photoshop CS3. A year or so ago I got fed up with it - photoshop is a great tool, but not designed for pixel work and having to work around everything to make it suitable was frustrating - and started looking for other programs. It was about that time that I discovered Aseprite.

Aseprite is not my primary tool for pixel art, but the only program I use for animations is Aseprite. It took a bit of getting used to, but it is MUCH better than PS CS3 was, and better than other pixel art specific programs I have used.

I would consider moving over to Aseprite as my main driver for pixel art if there were a few things different - my main program allows for holding down shift and using the mouse wheel to change the brush size, and I've come to rely on that. I also do not like the color picker, and prefer photoshop/corel painter/etc style of color pickers with a slider to change the hue, and picking the saturation/brightness on the picker. Right now the main methods of color picking are an MS Paint style where you have all the colors in one box, or by using Hue/Saturation/Brightness or RGB sliders, and I find it difficult to choose a good color with the precision I'm used to.

All in all, this is an excellent pixel art-specialized art and animation program. This is not a full suite painter program like Photoshop, so don't expect to do digital painting. This is for pixel art, and the specialization makes it extremely suited for the task.

Imagine if Life is Strange was one episode long. That's the gameplay style, narrative style, and story type you'll get from this game. It's 3-4 hours long. Whether it's worth $20 to you is your choice, but it absolutely was to me and I highly, highly recommend this game.

This game is a view into the lives of civilians in a wartime crisis. It is one of the most heartwrenching games I've ever played, and really gets you into the head of the characters. There are some extremely difficult decisions that need to be made in the game, and it's hard to juggle the physical and mental needs of the characters. One of the most engaging games I've played in a long time. Definitely my GoTY, if not my favorite PC game to date.

If you like action platformers and the progression elements of 10,000,000, this is the perfect game for you.
