great survival horror, definitely play if you are a fan of older resident evils, and its easy enough to recommend even if the puzzles and combat can be intentionally wonky. Really enjoyed it.

Awesome gameplay, but the parts that really shine are the setpieces. Really gripping, and I have no issue recommending this game to anyone who wants a solid AAA game that doesn't push microtransactions or DLC to be good.

If you ever thought you would get through life without saying you would give anything to kill a man with a die for a head, you probably shouldn't buy this game.

ORWELL is a hybrid game somewhere between visual novel and point and click adventure. In the game, you are an investigator hired by the nation in testing out a new law which allows the government to spy on its citizens in order to find criminals. While this doesn’t sound too far off from where we are today, we can assume ordinary citizens aren’t having their wires tapped and all their online activity personally searched into. But that blurred line between what in this game is fiction and what is potential reality is where the game really shines, and pushes me to giving this game a general recommendation.
ORWELL starts off with investigating into a bomb that went off on a popular plaza and investigating a person of interest who was at the plaza. This is the only cutscene in the game and I really need to say that it shows how ugly the art style is. ORWELL has this odd polygonal art style that just doesn’t look right, and the game does nothing to utilize the style as well. Take a game like Wind Waker and the cell shading is important to the overall feel of the game, and the entire game would be very different if they had gone in a more realistic style. ORWELL does not earn that right to have an abstract art style, and it looks all the worse because of it.
After the explosion, you begin digging into the meat of the game, which is going through people’s internet presence and phone calls and finding condemning information about them to fit them for the crime. The writing here then would be the important aspect to take away, and getting generally invested in the world or ORWELL should take precedence. However, this is another place where if the world of ORWELL was given to another developer with another vision, it probably would’ve been much more successful in world building that ORWELL currently is. The characters all generally fall into 2 categories; people who rebel against the government and people who are roped into rebelling against the government, and as such you get a lot of “it’s us or big brother vibes” when making your decisions which tends to not make the decisions feel organic. At several points in the game you can choose whether to report certain information to your supervisor and it affects how the supervisor views the target. However, these choices are often obviously superficial, and the contrasting information that you can give is usually contradicting in the sense that some information is outdated while other information is up to date. This is different than what an actual Orwellian inspired piece would aim for, where there are 2 facts that cannot exist within the same space and you are forced to accept both. For example, one contrasting information you need to choose between uploading to your supervisor is someone’s address. One is obviously right, and the other is outdated. It doesn’t mean the person didn’t use to previously live at the outdated address, but it’s just a matter of relevance. The game would be cooler if there were more instances of actual “doublethink” moments, instead of relying on portraying certain information in a correct or incorrect way.
Speaking of being more Orwellian, the world of ORWELL is loaded with references to the novel by George Orwell, 1984. But this is another reason why the experience of the game is cheapened. A lot of the characters in the game are obvious references to people in 1984 and other dystopian media, such as a friend named Huxley or using the screenname w1n5t0n. If done sparingly, this could’ve been a neat little nod to the works of Orwell, but literally every character you interact with has some connection to the book, and the writing again suffers. It’s no longer a “hey, that’s a pretty neat reference,” but more so a “none of these characters seem original because the source material is being way overused.”
Ok, so all I’ve done is talk about the bad art style, the lacking writing, and non-significance of the gameplay, so why would I still recommend it? The reason I recommend it is because of that blurred line I mentioned at the beginning. That feel where you feel like you are gathering information about just another ordinary citizen, your mind begins to go what would this world really be like? If I send this review to my friends on messenger, what could someone get from my writing of it? One of the other things that happens a lot in the game is the people you talk to get implicated as well, so if I sent a message saying I was planning an attack to my group of friends, in ORWELL, everyone would be investigated on to find more evidence behind my potential crime and if they were involved in anyway. I think when some paths lead nowhere in ORWELL, it’s only a natural consequence that not everyone is going to be a criminal in the eyes of the government, but following the path to the end is pretty satisfying in the game. Despite the lackluster writing and world building, you do actually feel a voyeuristic guilt looking into everyone life between their social media accounts, medical records, college attendance, job records, blog posts, and so on. You can’t help but think if someone were to investigate me, they would find my screennames, my posts all over the internet, my video replays from streaming, and could trace words I said years ago to implicate me in something I was not a part of.
Altogether, the game has obvious flaws. It’s short, it has a forgettable art style, forgettable characters, and overall a forgettable plot. But playing through everything and seeing how everything plays out is thrilling in a way that no other game has ever provided for me. There is an ORWELL season 2 planned, and if they could just step away from the source material and feel more liberty to explore the world they’ve gone ahead and made, a lot of the issues I have with season 1 would be rectified. Overall, a 7/10. If you like dystopian media and the thought be being a voyeur into the lives of the ordinary citizens, give it a shot.

This game is what every indie rogue like you see on steam aspires to be. During this sale I have bought 3 more rogue likes to try and break the mold of playing nothing but rebirth, but I doubt any game will ever come out that will stop me from trying to do just one more run.
