It's one of those games that keep you on your toes at all times -- not because it's scary, but rather because it can be quite unforgiving with your mistakes, meaning you always have to be extra careful with each move you make. Opened the door to a room without scanning it before? Whoops, there was an alien in there and now your drone is destroyed. Good luck salvaging it from an infested room!

At least in the early game, it's unlikely that you will have ways to deal with enemies directly. So in a situation like the aforementioned one, you'll have to put your strategic advantage at work -- herd your enemies through the rooms by opening and closing doors, and then blow them into the space by opening an airlock in the room they're in. Problem solved.

Being extra precautious can only take you so far, though, as the game has a number of unpredictable variables. Some of them you have more control over, some you have less (if any). Your video feed may stop working temporarily, upgrades may break, doors may stop functioning, pipes may rupture and leak radiation into a room... Also, remember that airlock strategy? Even though it's practical, it also has its drawbacks, as it will suck not only your enemy into space, but also any loot, and it can potentially destroy doors as well.

All these events will happen more than a few times in a single run, and if there was a hazard you couldn't predict or prevent from happening, it's most likely that there will be a way to work around it. So instead of feeling random and unfair, these features enrich the experience for players that enjoy planning and facing unfavorable odds.

Just do know when to cut your losses short, though; sometimes it's better to leave that single unexplored room as it is. However, just like me, I fear you won't learn that lesson until you've experienced it for yourself...

The Dragon Quest franchise hasn't evolved much in terms of systems, and that's by design. The framework that made the first games popular is still present on Dragon Quest XI, and big parts of it are still untouched. That permeates most of the game, for the better and for worse: you get a classic turn-based combat system, a story with a fairly simple and straightforward goal (though filled with great character vignettes along the way) and soundtracks played in MIDI -- though thankfully, that can be worked around if you take some minutes to look for mods on the internet. Visuals are certainly very far from oldschool, however, as Unreal Engine 4 is used here to employ a whole new realistic-yet-still-cartoony look to Toriyama's art.

If you're looking for a sprawling adventure that spans dozens (and dozens) of hours and are willing to forgive some of its questionable design choices, this is it. Meet captivating characters, explore dungeons, level up your party and progress through the story while you journey in a incredibly well realized world.

Tough but extremely fun platformer about a girl in a journey for self-discovery. Each new chapter not only presents heartwarming, emotional and/or intense story beats, but also brings new mechanics that shake up the gameplay in multiple ways, keeping the experience always fresh and engaging.

The game also is quite meaty: there are plenty of secret rooms, hidden collectibles and bonus stages, with a super-hard free DLC with over 100 levels on the horizon -- in other words, there's a lot to sink your teeth into if you're looking for something that offers more bang for your buck.

RE-enter the survival horror

Though Resident Evil was originally released in 1996, this remaster is based off the 2002 remake, only released on the GameCube, and later, Wii. Thus, this HD version is the third time the remake gets released -- now on current generation consoles and PC, which means this gem is finally available to a much wider audience. Deservedly so.

As a survival horror title, you will be zigging and zagging through maze-like environments in order to gather resources, solve puzzles and avoid (or fight) zombies and other monsters. Knowing the ins-and-outs of your surroundings is essential, as you need to plan your route carefully -- most of the time the level design is nonlinear and interconnected enough to allow you to take alternate paths to reach the same destination. After all, given the game's genre, it's unlikely your ammunition will be enough to allow you to waltz through every room and take care of every threat.

Zombies, while slow, may be a bit tough to dodge due to the tight nature of the hallways and rooms. Dogs, on the other hand, are faster than your character, but easier to dodge and deal less damage. You will come across many other biological weapons as you play, from slow passive-agressive creatures to agile deadly monsters, and once new enemies are introduced, they may start appearing in previously explored areas, messing up with your once safe route.

Another factor that can ruin your life (and resources) are the Crimson Heads. These powered up zombies can run (!), hit like a truck and take more bullets to go down. But there's a catch -- they are actually regular zombies the player eliminated and didn't dispose of properly. So, after killing a zombie, burn them with kerosene (which of course is a limited resource) or obliterate their head with a good shotgun blast, otherwise you may regret revisiting the place where you killed them later on!

On top of all these dangers ahead of you, you'll be mostly progressing through the game by solving puzzles -- and there are plenty of them, from simple riddles to puzzle boss fights. You will have to act logically, memorize codes, interpret files, investigate the environment in search of hints and so on. If it feels like you're missing something required to complete a certain puzzle presented in a room, there's no doubt you will eventually find the item needed to solve that when you least expect. And then, you will need to smartly backtrack your way back to said room only to be greeted with more key items, precious ammo and/or new places to explore. Rinse and repeat.

The whole experience is backed by a great atmosphere from start to finish: the suspenseful tracks are there, the relieving save room tune is there as well; prerendered environments, though obviously upscaled from the original NGC release, still look very good, and lighting reacts more realistically to character models[images.onesite.com], greatly enhancing the look of the game while maintaining the core artwork.

Additionally, there are several unlockables that gives a lot of replayability to the game, such as outfits, new weapons and, most importantly, new difficulties. Beating the game more than a couple of times, for instance, rewards the player with the Invisible Enemy mode, which is exactly what it sounds like.

All in all, Resident Evil HD REMASTER is an amazing title. Its smart design constantly challenges the player by making them adjust their routes on the fly in order to avoid threats and save resources, while travelling back and forth through zombie filled rooms and hallways to solve puzzles and progress through the story. Wrap that gameplay loop around a solid presentation that oozes atmosphere and you have a tense, yet gripping experience.

I can say a lot of nice things about Okami. It's got charming characters, an interesting premise, and a strikingly great artstyle. I can say quite a bit of not-so-nice things, too -- unfortunately, the game is a bit too much of a cakewalk. Combat isn't challenging (nor very refined, to tell you the truth) and most of the dungeons are really straightforward. Oh, and unrelated to the difficulty itself, but I have my issues with the way the story is structured.

But for this review, I just wanted to focus on an individual aspect I believe Okami does really well: the exploration. The game is on its peak when it leaves the player to uncover its sprawling hub areas.

As Amaterasu, the god of sun, you'll adventure through these open fields bending the nature to your will with the help of all kinds of techniques learned along the journey. You can do stuff like rejuvenating withered trees and manipulating water or wind to put out fire. Also, the earlier areas are full of obstacles that can't be overcome, since at that point you're yet to learn the required skills to solve them -- that gives you a reason to reexplore said areas later, only to find more places brimming with secrets tucked away: be it buried chests, one of the 99 Stray Beads scattered across the whole game or animals to be fed (really).

In doing these tasks, you are rewarded with treasures, consumables and experience, which aren't really needed, given the game's rather low difficulty. But you just can't help: exploring every nook and cranny of the map is just fun and that part of the experience really makes it feel like one of those great late 90s/early 00s collectathon games.

Gather 3 other friends and enjoy chaotic matches of complete duck mayhem. Hilarious moments are pretty much a lock.

Also, it has a button dedicated to the sole action of quacking. Nothing better than flooding quacks to tease your opponent.

Had to take out a bunch of captains, but was getting wrecked by every one of them. Went after their bodyguards and mind controlled each one of them. Watched my evil plotting unfold as I sent them all to kill their respective captains.

Seriously -- if you're gonna play Shadow of Mordor, play it for the Nemesis System. The game is really average all around, but this system can create some really fun and unique situations.

If you look past the janky animations and convoluted UI, you'll find an online military sim which excels when it comes to emergent situations.

However, you might want to take some time to learn the ropes and then play with some friends, or else you'll probably get bored in the first hour.
