Honestly, I wish I knew lol. I just upload it and pray.

What I think helps is I export from SFM as a .tga file. That file type preserves color data much better than .jpg or .png. More color data allows for smoother and cleaner editing.

In Photoshop, I always render as a .png file, since it has the better quality than .jpeg or .gif.

Photoshop also has the options to compress images before even hitting 'export,' or there are presets for different amounts of compression. That way I can see if my art loses any noticeable quality.

I'm unsure if other programs have this ability, but the goal is to compress as much as you can without losing quality/causing artifacts to show up (crunchy looking images).

TL;DR // Export art from SFM as a .tga file -> Edit in PS or other program -> Check for quality
-> Export as .png

By the way i wanted to ask how do you make your artwork not lose detail while uploading to steam? i know about compressing i just want to know how do YOU do it specifically. Help would be much appreciated :balloonicorn:
