Path of Exile introduces a new league mechanic every three to four months and the new mechanic can vary in terms of it's fun. Although I play the game casually and sub-optimally, it has a good blend of new and familiar. Typically, I will only play one or two builds a league, and spend the duration of the league learning the ins and outs of the particular build. There tends to be enough repetition that I can turn my brain off for certain parts while still having fun, and enough new (in the league mechanic and the build) to drive me to play for a hundred or so hours per league. While the game is about half as exciting for me now as it was when I first started, I would recommend it for its good graphics, decent story, and depth of mechanics. Note that in a way there are too many mechanics and knobs in Path of Exile for a beginner, but there's also a lot of resources to learn the game.
