The level layouts are creative and work with the theme of the each "world". The mountaintop sun temple has big open arenas with lot's of long range fights, while the dwarf forge world is cramped, dark, and features enemies that almost act like traps being sprung.

No boring parts or exposition dumps. You click play and you are shooting within seconds of the level loading. Very fast paced!

I have a lot of complaints about this game but before I get into them I need to talk about the gunplay. You get a small arsenal of weapons you can carry around with you that are all great at tearing though enemies (even the pistol can be useful). Most of them have interesting alternate fire modes, my favorite being the shotguns slug mode that can send people flying back 10 feet. There are also a few "nanite abilities" (superpowers) that use can use, a short range teleport, ground pound, a force punch, and a gravity well that explodes. Having all of these options to do your killing helps keep the combat pace up almost on par with DOOM levels of speed. The combat is just plain fun and is the highlight of the game. If this game was an FPS first then RAGE 2 would have been a smash hit but then there's the open world RPG aspect of the game, which really just breaks the game up into "the fun bits" and "the boring part between the fun bits". I recommend playing on nightmare difficulty, its going to make you use all the tools you have to win a fight and even though you'll die more than you might like at first you'll end up spending more time on the fun parts of the game.

The Story - Kinda bland bad-guy-is-about-to-do-a-bad-thing-and-you-are-the-only-one-who-can-stop-him story. After the tutorial you get 3 quest lines to go talk to some important people who can help you stop bad guy. They all follow this structure; 1) I'd love to help you but first I need your help to do this. 2) Get this gizmo for me. 3) Go attack this base. BAM you just beat the main quest line. No really, that's it. There are still bandit outposts scattered around the map for you to clear though.

Exploration - There are a lot of bandit outposts to clear, but they are all really short. Then there are resources to collect to upgrade your gear, not really that fun, just something to slow you down so you don't do all the actual fun parts of the game too quick. The driving sucks. The cars handle okay and the motorcycles are impossible to drive. The environment isn't all that interesting to look at.

Even with all of it's flaws I still kept coming back because the shooting was really fun and I wanted to try out different sets of abilities and weapons together. Now that I've tried out all those combos I feel like I've gotten everything I can out of the game and generally had a good time playing it, but I can't help but thinking if my time would have been better spent with another DOOM play-though.

The clunky movement system holds back what could be an amazing game.

This game is short but memorable. If you enjoyed the puzzles in the portal games you'll like this.

If M.C. Escher made video games, this would be one of them.

You'll build a base for hours on end only for a hacker to teleport in, kill you, take down your base and drop you out in the ocean over and over again.
