There are a few glaring issues with this game, but let me hit you with the: I don't care.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - A Divided Review

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has bloated features that have been thrown on-top, careless attempts at adding microtransactions, a subpar attempt to echo the original reboot's depth in story, and an overall more limiting feel on the RPG system to take a further back seat, while ACTION GAMEPLAY takes the wheel.

That said, I still enjoyed this game.
It's cyberpunk, for one, and a solid depiction of a well fleshed out cyberpunk world is something that can be more difficult to come by than you first realise. Speaking of a fleshed out world, Deus Ex *does* have that; and while the story seems a bit misguided from the start, especially if you've played Human Revolution, it turns out stuff did happen inbetween the games that are addressed in the mobile games (A poor choice made by Eidos/Square Enix in my opinion).

The setting, while looking fantastic, doesn't act out in the same way.
The dystopian setting of increasing prejudice towards augmented humans after the events of Human Revolution are essentially ignored and overlooked past a few cutscenes and indirect story-telling. You hear one thing about how big the divide is between pure humans and augmented humans, but see absolutely nothing to drive that information home, which leaves me divided in how to feel about it.
Games have a wonderful opportunity for a show-don't-tell approach to literally throwing in your face the reality of the world you're in, and that came across better through level design and small details laying around, but there are many places where you'd expect to see some rise in conflict or tension that seems to be lost as you run around solving mysteries in the name of progressing your playthrough.

This is realistically a minor set-back though, the world still looks great (Even in daytime, which is a good sign of success in cyberpunk dystopian settings), and you're rewarded for exploring levels and completing side-quests (some of which are very well written if I do say so myself, honestly give some of these side-quests a go, they're worth the time to complete).

Gunplay is fun. With a variety of weapons and mods that can be found through the world, and the options to take with them (i.e. stealth or big fatty BOOM BOOM killing mode) give enough variety to make playing this game more than once a viable choice.

Augments (From my memory) felt a bit watered down, I apologise for no specifics here it's been a while since I've played, but if I move you on from that mediocre level of game journalism, I can tell you that at least three augments are locked behind a DLC (The Tactical Pack DLC) which is pretty disappointing.

Speaking of disappointing DLC, I don't know how Square Enix decided it'd be a good idea, but they added a bunch of item packs for a single player experience game (???). I shouldn't need to explain how dumb it is that you pay an additional £3.99 for an assault rifle at level one, not only does this completely disregard any enemy scaling you had in mind, but it takes away from half the game which is managing the tools you find as rewards for exploring and doing quests, and utilising them effectively as you see fit, trying not to waste a tool you might need later, but also trying to use the reward you've earned yourself.

This, on top of Breach mode's rushed slap on top of the game, on top of the story not even being filled in for the player to begin with (Which is important both off the back of Human Revolution, if a new player hadn't played it, and just to fill players in on the events missed by sticking the story in mobile games less than 1% of the player base will have played - The main character is still Adam Jensen, and we shouldn't be having to piece together what this character has directly experienced.) feels like Square Enix really didn't care as much about this release, despite it's initial soft reboot being incredibly successful for what it is: The successor of what is referred to as "One of the best games of all time" by many.

Despite these glaring flaws, the game is still fun.
Combat is fun, stealth is fun, the lore and world-building is there in places if you stare hard enough, but most importantly in my mind: The Deus Ex is there, just about. The dialogue, the world, the characters.
And it's theme isn't taking a back seat, despite not being at it's fullest potential, it's still a good game and deserves credit for what it does very right, but Eidos and Square Enix need to take the time to ensure that their successes aren't overshadowed by cut corners or greed.

Many thanks if you read through this to the end, my formatting sucks and I'm too lazy to put that much effort into formatting a Steam review, but hopefully my language and structure upheld this read for you.

I review anime too, if you're interested you can go to my anilist[anilist.co].

Take care, drink water, love you
