Game is fun & easy to pick up and play without having to learn a billion new systems or any weird control schemes; it's familiar in actions, attacks, and block/dodge/parry, but this is not a "Souls-like" in any real way. The store page says "souls-like melee combat," but it isn't. It's a one button attack with hold for heavy attack, and one button to block or parry depending on which weapon you have equipped. Everything else is basic movement as in any FPS.

Ways the game is like Dark Souls:
  • 'fountains' are like 'bonfires' in that they are checkpoints
  • drop currency on death & you can retrieve it if you don't die trying to get it
  • break crockery

Everything else is not souls-like.
  • 1st person
  • 3 stats only, essentially damage, speed, and health, with certain abilities you unlock by leveling into those 3 stats
  • no stamina meter, no encumbrance, no inventory management
  • no roll button
  • there is a jump button
  • no ranged combat or magic
  • difficulty settings exist
  • healing flasks recharge without having to rest at the fountain
  • music is far more UT2004 coded than any DS game
  • no character customization or armor/clothing options
  • no bare feet
  • no innocent merchants to murder heartlessly
  • no summoning your level 400 friend to fight the boss for you and then drop a set of end-game gear you didn't earn
  • no 6 hour long YouTube glazing videos
  • is not obtuse in any way; everything makes sense immediately
  • no Guts cosplay
  • no sweaty bonfire duelists that refuse to use the arena

obviously tongue in cheek. The game is fun & good; it's just more of a circa 2000 quake clone that is melee only rather than souls-like. I've only played a few hours but I'm certainly going to play this one through to the end.

Almost forgot: kicking enemies off cliffs is great & I do it every chance I get.

This is one of those games that can be adequately reviewed with just a single word "disturbing," and whether that word is good or bad is up to you. I'm on board with it.

I hate to say it, but I was hoping for something super chill and relaxing. What I got was annoying jumping puzzles in 1st person and a 2 second invisible stamina meter.

The real question is: why?

Why is this game as bland as it is? There shouldn't be any reason for it to be this mediocre. I mean - how do you come from a game with a deep combo-based combat system as good as Nioh 2, and end up with this?

I've been playing for 28 hours and I can't really see why I should go on when there are just better games out there to spend my limited amount of time on this earth playing.

I cannot recommend at this time. Maybe it will get better content later, but at this time absolutely nothing about this game stands out.

I really, really enjoyed this game.

I enjoy turn-based strategy games of most descriptions - one of my favorites is XCOM 2. Maybe because of that I didn't think the game was as hard as some reviews suggest - just something to keep in mind. It's not TOO hard, and once you figure out the mechanics the game is very satisfying to play.

The best thing about this game is that it's EXACTLY like FFT.

The worst thing about this game is also that it's EXACTLY like FFT.

Highly recommended, as long as you like FFT.

Everyone who makes 2-12 hour long videos for youtube complaining about Bethesda should probably just play this game and stop being bitter.

I've been playing this game off and on now for a few months, and I don't know how far I am through it yet, but I don't hate it. I've just read a bunch of the reviews here on this page and can see how the game is at least somewhat divisive. I can only recommend or not recommend this game, so I choose to recommend.

It's not an XCOM game. It's not. I kind of feel like people who really hate the game were hoping for a legit, full-on XCOM experience, and this game is definitely NOT that. It's more like a good mobile game (in a good way) depth-wise that is vaguely related to XCOM. But the XCOM IP really adds nothing to the experience - it could have been set in any other setting and would have been exactly the same.

It's not hard. There is strategy involved, but there's no danger of characters dying, and encounters are fairly short if you know what you are doing. It's not like the characters are not fun to play from a mechanical perspective, but you definitely don't get invested in them, at all. You won't lose them, and there isn't much in the way of development and abilities - I mean, it's there, and it's enough, but that's kind of the problem. This game is just simply "enough" without being particularly satisfying. But yet, I can recommend it. It's a "meh. . . it's OK" kind of game.

One thing that does differentiate it from a regular XCOM game is that the turns are not divided by team, but instead every unit in the encounter has an order to perform, like an initiative system. This is alright by me. It's not a "bad" idea, but it would have been a LOT better if there were more ways to manipulate the order in which units perform. There are some ways to do this, but not nearly enough. Increasing options in this area alone could have greatly improved the gameplay.

I hate the banter. I don't think that's a controversial opinion and don't need to elaborate on it. It's a half-assed effort to try to invest you in the characters, and it just doesn't work. But honestly, it can be overlooked. Ignore it; nobody cares.

The "strategic layer" is OK. It's not bad. It's a single city with nine zones, and each zone can be staffed with one of three types of non-interactive units that provide passive income and may use cooldown abilities to lower panic/unrest - much like satellites in XCOM or contacting resistance enclaves in XCOM2, but I don't think these units can ever be lost. If they can, I haven't run into that in the game yet.

There are of course research options and noninteractive "covert ops" type missions that take time to complete, during which you cannot use the characters assigned to those tasks. There is also some limited training options that take time to complete. This is all OK, but it certainly is XCOM-lite. You just do these things and get the benefits; there doesn't really seem to be any particular way to establish special synergies with combat teams, because the units are all pretty bland - they are all "different," but you really just deploy four units and it doesn't particularly matter which ones you deploy. They are all equally blandly effective. It's like neapolitan ice cream with four flavors instead of three - four flavors, one box. Stick the other units in "special ops" or training or research and just go do whatever missions are on deck.

I'm not even torn one way or the other about the game. I just kind of like it the way I like mediocre pizza. It's not bad; it's good enough for now, and the price is right. Really, the game is absolutely worth the budget price; it's just not super special.
