Divinity is one of the most original takes on the old-school RPG formula I have ever played.

The game is great, the port is not. Constant crashing, weirdly long load times considering the game's age, general jank regarding controller usage, and Denuvo. It's a shambling mess and getting it to even work at times can be a terrible challenge since crashes happen at random.

This game is a slog, pure and simple. It starts out great in the first 5-8 hours or so, which is already a significant chunk of time - then Chapter 3 hits, and the game suddenly becomes rife with filler of the worst kind. Despite the fun combat and interesting RPG mechanics, I can't recommend this game less, because it does the worst possible thing an RPG of this kind can do - it disrespects your time.

At this current time the Origin in-game overlay is always enabled due to the "lightweight" Origin Steam wrapper, causing serious performance issues with this and many other games. Even launching the game via Origin, or disabling the in-game overlay in Origin, does not disable it on the Steam copy. EA customer support refuses to assist, most likely because they cannot, but the official line is that this is a "Steam issue." How an in-game lua hook that causes performance problems in an eight-year-old game that was provided for Origin integration by EA is a Steam problem is anybody's guess, but that's the official line for the time being.

I can't even simply install the game I purchased on Steam through my Origin account - attempting to download the game via Origin simply boots up Steam to install it here. And returning this game is out of the question as I was a dumb enough shmuck to purchase the DLC as well, meaning no matter what I do I will never get ALL my money back (which IS a Steam problem but that's another fit to pitch.) Even going into the config files and transforming a game on Unreal Engine 3 into potatomode doesn't fix the myriad performance issues that stem from the Origin Overlay's integration.

The worst part about this was that I was doing a playthrough of the whole trilogy specifically because I could purchase it on Steam now. A foolhardy notion, to be sure, seeing as I could have always done it if I was willing to suck it up and buy the games on Origin, but I guess I'm paying the price now for my foolishness. As it stands, I would wait until either EA offers some kind of fix to the Origin hook that has it respect your settings on their platform, an unofficial community patch of some kind, or the heat death of the universe - whichever one comes first.

This is definitely not what it looks like on the cover. It's a fun squad tactics game set in the XCOM universe with a cool and colorful cast of characters (except for Terminal, she can rot even if she is useful), some nice QoL improvements inherited from XCOM 2 mods, and a really low price. I'd honestly would have preferred 2K release this game at $15 instead of trying to undermine the average internet denizen's trust in the XCOM product with this weird 50% off of an already $20 game at launch stuff and the bad, misleading advertising that makes people think it's a much different, more cringeworthy game, so the thumbs up is for the sick game Firaxis made and not the terrible ♥♥♥♥ 2K is doing to try and bury it.

Valve's neglect of the game and constant and consistent gaslighting of the playerbase should not be representative of the overall game experience. Team Fortress 2 is an achievement in gaming.

EDIT: A LOT has changed in the past eight months for the MCC, including Reach, so I've changed my review to reflect that. Unlocks are a bit more fair and speedy now, performance has been greatly improved for all games (especially Reach, which still has some audio issues but thankfully they're more minor now and far more playable), m+keyboard aim assist has been added to some degree, and overall a lot of my complaints about the game from many months ago have now been addressed. There is still a fair amount wrong with the Collection, but overall I'd say it's worth the purchase if you really liked these Halo games on console and want them on PC.

Like I said, there are still problems - CE Anniversary is a hot mess (why do the old graphics run far worse than the new ones), Halo 2 Anniversary is less of a hot mess but the Anniversary multiplayer is horrible in ways that are more conceptual than technical, and there is no server browser or really effective means of joining custom games without an invite, but overall the collection is far more worth it in my books now.

I am leaving my old review up for posterity. If things continue to change, be they positive or negative, I will update this review again.

***

I really wish I didn't have to write this review.

Right now, Reach is a serious mess on PC. Audio issues are the biggest ones so far. Crackling, popping, bad sound mixing, everything. It makes the best-sounding Halo game sound like absolute garbage, worse than a $5 asset flip. I'm stunned they allowed Reach out in this state.

Also, the painfully slow speed that unlocks are dripfed to players (why do we even need to spend time and grind to unlock 10+ year old assets), lack of aim assist for mouse+keyboard players to help them stay competitive with controller players, and other issues minor and major, such as a very confusing purchasing scheme, make me really disappointed in 343 right now. I hope at least some of these issues are dealt with in the very near future, because playing Halo Reach's campaign without music is pain incarnate.
