Early Access Review
1.0 Update:

I'll try to keep this concise.

This game can be a lot of fun, especially once you've leveled up enough to have perks and everyone on the crew knows how things work. 1.0 nerfed some things, and these nerfs are incredibly noticeable until you get your emplacements leveled up quite a bit. As of 1.0, solo start is a LOT harder due to how inaccurate BRAIN turrets are.

As of 1.0, the game seems balanced around a crew of 3-4 fully leveled players who have made it past the first boss, who have done a good job of grinding alloys on the way, and who have gotten somewhat lucky with drops.

The problem right now is this: before that point, and especially at the very start, the weapons are so bad as to be frustrating. I believe this is primarily due to how terrible accuracy is. That said, not long after the point where you become effective, you become borderline OP, and the game becomes pretty easy. Still fun, as long as you're not a masochist.

Will also note, I've seen a few other reviews complaining about pilot dodging issues. This depends on the attack on the ship. With the frigate, as long as you have boost you can dodge pretty much everything except for close range fighter and interceptor barrages. With the larger destroyer, it's harder, and you need to be super agile to dodge the boss attacks (specifically you usually also have to re-angle the ship itself in addition to just moving).

If you aren't playing with mods, you're doing it wrong.

Let me begin by saying I really wanted to like this game. I loved ROTK 7, 8, and to a lesser extent 10. I've also emailed Koei support; if they give me any relevant info on the below, I plan to update this review to reflect their response.

So, the most important thing I wish I'd known before purchasing:
This is not an RPG. You do not control a character; you control a force. There are no unscripted character interactions, and as far as I've been able to dig no new interesting relationships form during gameplay.

Less important:
Recruiting enemy Generals is currently broken.
The larger AI forces steamroll.

I made the mistake of spending my first few hours in the game doing the tutorial and making custom characters, and by the time I discovered the issues above, I was no longer able to get a refund from Steam.

If you are looking for engrossing, infinite space exploration, this game is amazing. I love it. I made a small tweak to settings (turned gsync off, you can google it), and it runs fantastically with my GTX 1070/i5 setup. I've hit the point where I've found most of the regular upgrades, but I still keep finding new things. I find myself seeing some things repeatedly, but then I find new things. The best part though is the fact that every vista is different, and the drive to just keep looking doesn't go away. I don't know what's on the next moon, the next planet, the next system. If you don't get hung up on feature a or feature b that some people assumed would be there, then this game is for you.

In my first playthrough, I was running out of supplies on my island. I took my raft towards another island, and on the way saw a buoy. As I went to investigate the buoy, a shark pulled my raft out from under me. As I frantically climbed onto the buoy, paddle in hand, two other sharks started circling. I had the genius idea to paddle the buoy back to my island, which worked great until a fog rolled in and I got lost. Then it got dark. Then I fell off the buoy and the sharks ate me.

11/11

Seriously, though, I try to only buy early access games that I feel are worth their money in their present state. This way, even if they get abandoned, I feel like I got my money's worth. And this game did not disappoint. It's already a lot of fun to play, and it is BEAUTIFUL. I fully recommend it!

Did you like the "Choose your own adventure" style books when you were a kid?

Yeah?

Then buy this game.

I just finished my first playthrough, and I expect to play through at least one or two more times. The content is great. It really is a choose your own adventure style game, only the adventure involves being a necromancer/lawyer (Necrolawyer?). It's a lot of fun, and it is definitely the kind of game that you can play for only minutes at a time, or for hours. It's also nice to be able to listen to music while playing.

Final thought: If you like reading, and you like video games with stats and character customization, buy this game. I will be getting their other works soon.

Cheers.

So, after playing this game a bit, I feel it's safe to say that it's definitely worth it's cost. As far as grand strategy games go, it's quite fun, and fairly accurate. I'd definitely recommend finding the strategy guides available online. I'd also definitely recommend playing with friends, preferably in a LAN setting. If you're doing it over the net, you have to have one computer dedicated to hosting instead of playing, which is a pain. All in all, definitely an enjoyable game.

So. Where to begin? First off, I've really, really enjoyed this game so far. Granted, it's only been four hours of gameplay, but that's from a general lack of free time more than anything else. I will almost certainly have a different point of view than anyone who started playing earlier in the Alpha, so bear that in mind. My opinion will not have been infected (no pun intended) by having to have played through any "broken" builds. I'll also try to be concise.

- To begin, "A mix of DayZ and Minecraft" really is a great way to describe the gameplay, though the zombies are more of a menace than they have been in DayZ for a while.

- Next, yes, there is only one world. It is fairly large, though, so I expect to get another 10-15 hours out of play into it before I might start getting sick of it. And that's assuming that there's nothing interesting underground. That being said, there is a random world generation option coming. If I get bored with this world before it is released, then I'll just shelve the game, and come back to it once it is an option.

- More than anything else, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you play with friends. While playing solo was fun, playing with a friend or two definitely makes the game more enjoyable.

- This game is fairly difficult. I've only been playing on the medium difficulty, and I still have to be very careful to be in a safe place by nightfall.

- As for how well it runs.... well, I have a decent rig, with a 2GB video card, and the game on a solid state drive. With this setup, I can run everything on maximum with no frame loss or lag whatsoever.

- The only "bug" I've encountered so far is with the zombie dogs. Their pathing is rough, they're hard to hit when near because they usually spin in circles between attacks, and they occasionally glitch through walls.

- Speaking of bugs, the big flying ones are super annoying, and really the only thing I've found thus far that I dislike.

In conclusion, if you enjoy zombie themed survival games, enjoy games like Minecraft, and can get a friend or two to play with, you will almost certainly enjoy this game. I have so far, even when playing alone, and I feel like it was worth every penny even in it's current state. I look forward to getting to continue playing this game as it is developed.
