Though the world layout is frequently criticized, individual level design is generally pretty solid. It features shortcuts, items, secrets, nooks and crannies, among other elements that made Dark Souls 1 areas so engaging.

Where the base game disappoints is in its boss fights. Almost all of them are either frustrating or forgettable. Fortunately, this game comes with all three DLC, and there are plenty of good bosses in the DLC.

Despite its black sheep reputation, it's still worth playing for anyone that's a fan of the souls formula, even if it may take adjusting to its slower gameplay.
