Epic Games Store has a bad reputation because they pay publishers/ developers to have their games exclusive online on the Epic Games Store platform. So if say you wanted this game and have been excited for it, you wouldn't have been able to buy it on Steam, because it was exclusive only for purchase on the EGS. The exclusivity usually lasts for 1 or 2 years.
Gamers don't like EGS because the launcher is very poorly made, lacking basic features, and again, tried to force itself on people by removing the choice of people who wanted to pick another store over it.
EGS is also owned 40% by Tencent, a company very well known for terrible business practices and being suspected of being a spyware that sells your data.
