Great world with a good story

but ....

  • The combat system is lacking. It was clearly designed for 1v1 Duels and that is where it shines. But the moment you are fighting multiple enemies it sucks. The more, the worse it gets. Weapon balance is also off. Swords have by far the most depth to them because they have so many combos available to learn. Maces are OP because they are strong against armour where swords struggle. And Axes just suck.
  • The ending of the main story isn't good. It's way too open and the main objective of the game, which is pinned to your Questlog as a main quest throughout the entire game, is never completed. Henry even says that he really wants to do that in the final cutsene. But then it blackscreens, says the end and it's just over. Feels like someone left out the last third of the game. Super disappointing end to an otherwise good story.
  • The save system in this game is the absolute worst I have ever seen and it is made bad on purpose. The game only auto saves during certain points in some Quests or sometimes when sleeping in a bed. In order to quicksave you need a limited resource called a `Saviour Schnaps`. So you have to carry it around at all times. If you don't have any it means you can't save without going to a bed. This means you waste time with backtracking or you can lose a lot of progress to bugs or crashes. It is super annoying and an infuriating design choice. Fan boys will tell you that it's more immersive this way but it isn't. You lose an hour of progress because you can't quicksave properly and now you get to have the same conversations, fight the same battles, ride along the same paths and do the exact same quests all over again. Lame as ♥♥♥♥.
Luckily there is a mod that lets you do unlimited quicksaves whenever you want. I consider this mandatory to have fun with the game.

Overall this is a good game. The world is well made with lots of details and interesting quests. It looks great and the story is really nice except for the ending. But it definitely has its drawbacks and could be better.

Steadily going downhill with every update

The basic concept of this game is great. It is what has kept it alive all these years and it is the only reason to stick around at all. But the execution, especially on a technical level has become incredibly bad and just keeps getting worse.

The UI is a mess. It was never truly great. But with the engine update in August 2024 they fully reworked it and made it so much worse. It has been getting a bit better patch by patch since then but it is still far from good. Though this is one of the smaller issues with the game.

The balance is all over the place. They nerf or buff things with a sledgehammer and make drastic changes to the gameplay, but then don't adjust them if they are broken, useless, overpowered or ruin the fun. Things will stay that way for months.

The game has some questionable design decisions which make it less fun than it could be. Most noteworthy here is what Hunt players refer to as 'Trading'.
It means that two players shoot each other at the same time and thus kill each other. In a game that takes muzzle velocity into account that makes some sense.
But in Hunt the trade window, that is the time the server allows for this to happen, is 800ms. Almost a full second. This is horrible. When there is a large delay between you and your enemy, say because one of you has a high ping, then it can happen that you get shot by a dead man.
You will shoot at your opponent, see blood splatter, get a hitmarker, hear his deathscream, see him drop down. And then get shot by a guy who has been dead on your screen for almost a full second.
It is laughable and looks completely ridiculous. Sounds like it's a bug, right?
It isn't. It is supposed to work like this. It is a design decision by the developers to let it work like this.

Bugs are everywhere. There is a running joke among Hunt players that the developers will break something with every single patch, no matter how small it is. Except that it is not a joke. It's reality. They can not make an update without breaking some aspect of the game. If you're lucky it will only be a small irrelevant aspect. But it might be something major. Like reloading. I am not joking. The game had a reload bug that would prevent you from reloading your weapon properly for SIX MONTHS .
The reloading in a first person shooter did not work properly for 6 months. This reads like satire but it was a real thing.
And there were other disasters like the ladder glitch, the LeMat exploit or derendering exploits. They just can't get it under control. Something always breaks and it takes them forever to fix it. And the fix will break 3 other things again. Their quality control is terrible or management just doesn't care about giving the devs the time to actually make a functional update for once.

The servers for this game are horrible. Only 30 Hz tickrate, frequent latency spikes or packet loss and sometimes they'll just crash entirely. They have been talking about server improvements for years but never really did much.

But what finally broke me after all these years was the performance after the engine update.
In August 2024 they update their game engine to the newest version of CryEngine. They also announced an increase in minimum requirements for the game. My system is above those minimum requirements. But I just can not get good performance.
Right after the engine update I had stutters and frame drops. I changed some settings and got it under control to where it was ok. Not resolved, but playable.
Then they did some smaller updates. My performance got worse. The frame drops were back. So was the stuttering. And on top of that I now had to deal with lags too.
About a month later they published another update. My performance got even worse. To the points where I did not want to keep playing. It is not fun when you frequently lose because of lags, stutters or frame drops.
Then in October 2024 they published another large update. I had hoped that this would fix my problems. But it didn't. The frame drops are still there, so are the lags and the stuttering. But now I also have crashes. I can not play for more than half an hour without the game crashing. Sometimes mid game, sometimes in a loading screen, sometimes just in the menu. It is entirely unplayable and absolutely no fun.
You might think that this is a problem with my computer. But it isn't. Benchmarks are fine. Stress Tests over hours are fine. Other games run fine. Just Hunt doesn't. And it keeps getting worse.
I tested around with graphic settings, I verified the game files, I reinstalled the game, I did a clean install of my GPU drivers. I just don't know anymore.
And it ran fine prior to said engine update. I didn't really have these problems before. Especially not this significantly.

I have over a thousand hours of playtime. I have played this game since early access. I even played the closed Beta back in the day. I want to like this game. I want it to run well. I want to have fun playing it.
But it is too much of a technical mess and has too many problems that don't get addressed. In the state that the game is in right now I simply can not recommend it to anyone.
I hope they'll bother fixing it. But I am also realistic enough to know that that's unlikely to happen anytime soon. Maybe it will never happen.

Easily one of the quickest purchases I have ever made

Already spent almost 200 hours with the base game including beta testing this DLC for ~30 hours.
3,99€ for lots of great new characters, weapons, items, a whole set of new waves, enemies and bosses aswell as a new game mechanic is an incredible deal.

It's capped to 60 FPS for seemingly no good reason
The third person camera is always too low, even in the highest setting. In general the camera is not good
It requires Ubisofts third party launcher
It is an always online game, even if you want to play alone. So if they turn off the servers you'll be left with a digital paperweight
It's also just not much fun. Even for an arcade racer the handling of the cars feels weird

Overall a good DLC. If you liked the base game you'll like this too.

Except for the 'Somewhat Damaged' quest. Worst mission in the entire game and it's not even close. Horrible Hide and Seek gameplay while you backtrack through a boring level. It ruins the entire fun of the gameplay and in turn also the tension of the story which is supposed to be at it's peak here. I'm just glad that I played the other ending first. Whoever designed this mission needs to get fired.

Too clunky and janky to be enjoyed

Multiple aspects of the game are quite poorly made. Sadly this makes it very unfun to play.
A few examples of what I mean:
  • The controls only allow you to move in 4 directions. Front, left, right or back. This is quite annoying when you want to roll as your character can't roll at a 45° angle. When fighting in narrow spaces or on small elevated walkways this can get you killed very quickly.
  • The hitboxes are incredibly unprecise. I rolled away from a monsters swing attack, saw his claw going 2 to 3 meters past me and I still got hit. The other way around I had situations where I attacked with a Greatsword and saw half the texture of the blade going INTO the body of the enemy, but he didn't take damage. It just didn't count the hit. When shooting a bow or crossbow past a wall or object this is also very obvious. The arrows and bolts are often stopped despite clearly flying past and then get stuck in mid air.
  • Sometimes you will just die to random bugs. I rolled into a pot to destroy it and was insta killed by it. This is not supposed to happen. It's bugged. I also died when traversing a fog gate because the game placed my character too far to the side and I immediately fell down a cliff. In a hardcore game which punishes you for every death this is VERY frustrating and must not be a thing.
  • Multiple places in the game have death traps which you will die to unless you already know about them. Something like an enemy jumping at you from behind a corner and stabbing you in the back. This isn't fun. Neither is it challening or difficult. It's just annoying.
  • You sprint by holding down B on a controller. This can not be set to toggle. You move your camera with the right stick. As a result you can not move your camera while sprinting. This is annoying when you want to run around large bosses because you can not see them as you will always look to the front while sprinting.
  • There is no pause button. You can open any menu but the game keeps going. Fanboys will go on about how this is immersive but it's just annoying. Someone rang the door or something else in real life needs your attention? Well screw you because you can't pause. Some might argue that this is due to the Online functionality of invasions, but it's not available in Offline mode either. It's just a bad design decision.
  • The UI is a horrific mess. There are multiple menus for equipment and the things you'd want to do with your equipment are scattered across them. Some stats are displayed in multiple menus, some only in one, but not the other.

Overall easily half, if not more, of the games 'difficulty' comes from how janky and clunky it is. And that just means it's not fun to play.

The game has some positive aspects too.
  • The atmosphere within the world is great
  • The lore and story (while very cryptic) are interesting
  • The way the level design loops back in on itself is amazing
  • The visual design of the enemies looks really good

But the negative side sadly outweighs the positive side by a lot. It's just not fun to play this game.

The fact that this is the Remastered version of the game seriously makes me wonder how bad the Original was. Because honestly, this does not feel like a Remastered Game to the standards of 2018. It feels like a copy paste of a game from the late 2000s.

Bad performance makes it unplayable

My PC slightly exceeds the recommended specs. I have a R7 3800X, a RX 5700 XT, 32GB RAM and an NVME SSD.
Yet the game struggles to even maintain 20 FPS. It mostly runs at a single digit framerate. I turned the graphics all the way down and it still couldn't hit 30 FPS, let alone 60. I tried using the UE5 Beta, but it didn't help either.

With framerates this low the game is unplayable. It looked interesting and I liked the funny sounding Bavarian voice over, but the performance is simply unacceptable.

I'm going to refund it and recommend you to stay away from it.
