In comparison to past fallout games, the roleplaying aspect is diminished as there are no skill checks aside from charisma. It feels like an action game with RPG elements at times. It is nonetheless replayable as you can choose from different factions to side with. Combat is much smoother than previous entries but is not as advanced as other titles. Due to the voiced protagonist and new dialogue camera system, the game feels cinematic.

Character creation is in depth, allowing you to directly modify the face of both your character and their spouse. Unfortunately, colour/tone sliders are no longer present when choosing your hair or skin tone. The companion system has also been improved by adding an affinity system. This allows you to romance, befriend and become enemies with your companions.

The game is still buggy at times. One major issue is creation club content resulting in quests not functioning properly. There is also a "rainbow texture bug" where the occasional texture becomes increasingly broken as you walk towards them with reports of it occuring on different graphics cards and even on console versions. Preculling glitches out so bad you can expect to see entire chunks of land and building disappear before your eyes. The creation club content is also very weak and is often just reskins. Whilst they are claimed to be properly tested in house, they tend to be buggy and gamebreaking messes.

Vanilla Fallout 4 felt lacking in terms of NPC and outfit variation where often several of your settlers could have the same face. You also cannot wear all outfit sets with armour pieces which can be frustrating. Mods have luckily diversified these aspects in game. The settlement system has also been expanded upon with mods, allowing you to rebuild the Commonwealth with a vast range of items.

It is extremely fun to explore the game, especially with survival and no fast travel. Bethesda does an excellent job at environmental storytelling!

Overall, the vanilla game is decent enough but mods have increased my enjoyment of the game exponentially and are what keep me coming back to the title which is not really of Bethesda's doing.
