I was aware that this was a Gatcha game before I began. But the Gatcha IS the game. It’s laced into every aspect of the gameplay. The story is detracted by the fact that you are collecting currencies to progress and grow. It minimizes the experience. And the hating on the content, combined with the lack of save mechanics aren’t really compatible with Tactical RPGs. Too much is sacrificed for this hybrid. If you are a Gatcha RPGer, or wealthy and bored then give it a go. But it’s not worth slogging through mechanics designed for micro-transaction to get at the story. It wasn’t engaging enough to warrant the time expenditure. I just think that TPGs are incompatible with micro transaction gaming. This just reaffirmed it for me. I’d’ve rather paid 60$ for the full version and been left alone. And if you can pay for power in multiplayer you’re not actually winning anything. And for the record, 30$ for a character can’t be the standard. If my math was correct to be at cap, level 15, for where I am in the story would have either taken my 8 hours of play to 19 hours with a grind for materials, across five days (thanks to the caps in playtime) or castor me 120+ dollars at this price point. That is predatory. It’s just sad.

EARLY ACCESS IS A WIN

Early Access isn't for Everyone. This game is little more than a Functional Large Scale Prototype as of launch day. Which is something the Developers told us VERY clearly via every channel that wasn't nailed down. The game has a Fantastic Community and a highly aggressive development roadmap for the next year.

I for one signed on to be part of this community as it evolves in hopes that it might bring back a modernized piece of what I got from a decade of Dark Age of Camelot. The Devs have been transparent. And I personally want to support the game as it comes into existence. If you're reading the review bombs for people who wanted another Arc, then I guess that means this game isn't for you. And that's okay!

If you're someone who likes to be part of a universe as it expands, and grows into something and doesn't mind wading through evolving features then this is for you. If you were looking for the next Age of Conan then I think this isn't for you. At least... not in its current state.

Personally, I haven't been this excited in a long... long time.

Early Access Review
I wanted this to be a Story Driven and semi-social experience. I still think there’s room for some PVP layer. But that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted DnD Borderlands. And that’s what I got. The removal of Micro-transactions and the permanence of the experience make this something I want to spend my time on. I hope the universe continues to grow. And I hope that after the core world is done small expansions of zones and worlds are released. This game went from one of my biggest disappointments from a long failed beta to something I’m excited to see grow. Good job team. Keep it up.

THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO JRPG FANS IN A LONG TIME
This is without a doubt the absolute best Action RPG I've played in years.

DISCLAIMER: Watch the Anime by whatever means you can. Diving into this title is like playing WoW after Wrath of the Lich King. You can, but you won't get the experience you deserve.

I was not a classic Granblue player. Rather, I'm someone who grabbed the franchise prior to this game coming out. And I have to say I am awed by the creation.

1999 PG-13 RPGing Glory
I am not one of those hardcore players who wants the top score or the fame. Rather, I am a table top guy, who loves his stats and menu systems. I have played each of the FF games about 20 times through a piece. With varying love of each. This game tells a romantic, gentle, sweet story, which is full of kindness, friendship, and a lot of Gosh and Golly. There is a word for this universe: Kind.

Gameplay
It's nothing new. And EVERYTHING to write home about. It has FFXIV's Telegraphing and Cutscene Direction style. It has a plethora of sidequests (Direct, Implied, and Environmental). It's a themepark that doesn't FEEL like a themepark. You're on a rollercoaster, on rails, and yet you can get off the ride and explore at any time.

It's as if the former FF Dev Team sat in a room and said, "What are your top 5 favorite games, and what made them uniquely the best?" and then spent 3 years adding EVERY ONE of those mechanics to the game with love and care.

I can say with satisfaction that if one of these came out a year, like a season of an Anime, I would play them all. It totally filled my MMO Craving, replaced Monster Hunter for me, and is something I am looking forward to every minute playing.

I'm never. Putting. It. Down.
I love it. I love it on my Steam Deck. I love it on my PC while I'm coding. I love it with other music. I love it with it's own. I love it. I'm a productivity junky. I own them ALL. I've used everything. And nothing has EVER just grabbed my heart like my little friends in the Window box do. Are there things that can be improved? Yes. More toys, more characters, more pieces, saved presets, better list tool formatting, and a thousand other things which I'm sure are on the Dev's wish-list. But none of it matters. Out of box this is a FANTASTIC tool. And I'm excited to see it climb the ranks of things I've spent the most time using. And I plan on giving it a credit in the credits of my own Unity Game... as it will have played a very important role in keeping me sane and focused. Thanks for creating this. I love it. Truly.

A HUGE STEP IN THE WRONG DIRECTION
I love the Ankama IPs. I think that WAKFU, and DOFUS are one of the most incredibly story driven, creative, Anime Inspired worlds of all time. I think they have the potential to create some remarkable narrative driven games. And I see the universe as one of the only viable OnePiece alternatives.

This is a board game riddled with microtransaction and little more. The company seems determined to expand into the 'Pay for Everything' market; rather than capitalizing on the Lore and focusing on Table Top RPGs, Open World Games, and 3rd Person Narrative Driven Puzzle RPGs.

I agree with the positive reviewers and that's WHY I'm giving it a negative review. This is a setup for a Power Based game, which you can Buy Anything of Meaning and is focused on being a pay-for-play collector's game, I think even including the RPG banner on this would be inappropriate. It's not an RPG, and it doesn't look like the foundation is there to make it one.

If all you liked was the Dofus combat, this game is for you. If, however, you've been waiting the last four years for them to expand on the Lore Success of Wakfu, and build something Story Driven and Community centric, then you are going to be horribly disappointed.

I'll check back, as this is little more than a tech demo. But this is a swing and a miss and will never rise to be anything more than another niche TCG with a flawed financial model.

THE BEST THING YOU WILL PLAY THIS YEAR ★★★★★

It goes so much farther beyond being a great DnD Game... Balder's Gate is a call back to games which value the player. It is totally filled with weird bugs, odd mechanics, and broken bits. Which is exactly what you want from a Table Top Turn Based RPG. The story is fantastic, so is the music, and the voice acting. Combat is engaging, and the skills system is perfect. This is exactly what you want from a Dungeons and Dragons game. Playing with friends makes going through secondary runs worth it. And the game has a mountain of replayability.

As someone ADHD Terrified of these games I vote that you play with a controller. The game plays so much easier when you don't have to search through anything to find it. Mayhap watch a 'Things I wish I'd known' video for mechanics like using the camp, gathering loot, equipping things to other characters, etc. But this game loves its story, and its players. And it is one of the finest RPGs I have ever had the pleasure to play.

I am in love with this game...
Did you ever play Rygar? Or the Legacy of Kain Games? This is 100% a throwback to that style of game.

It's far from a popular opinion, but I hated Elden Ring. I put over 200 hours in on PS5, in an effort to overcome the combat system and the abusive arc, only to have myself feel like I was being put through a shredder. It wasn't fun. This... this is fun.

There are always a PILE of things I wish for in a game. But this is hands down in the ZELDA classic vein. You can feel the love and intention the Developers put into everything.

Is it perfect? No. But as an avid Action RPG (focus on the Role Playing aspects) this has me hooked. It has excellent mechanics, a smooth character controller, and isn't trying to eat my skin every six inches.

There are things I don't love. I think the Camera controls could use some refinement. The hard lock on characters should be moveable to a new target, and lock on at a greater distance. Some of the movement physics issues others have mentioned need work.

But seriously... Kena was too linear and too short. That was 50$. Elden ripped my face off for 60$. Let's not even talk about the 80$ mess that was Forespoken. I love my action games. I love TCG systems in those action games. (Yes I'm one of 5 people to play Baten Kaitos all the way through). And I love my Indie Games. I'm 4 of 6 years into developing my own full scale title at the time of this review. I've spent thousands in the last five years for games with AAA ratings which didn't offer half of this attention to detail and careful craftsmanship. As a Roguelike, I expect they can just funnel content in as the game ages and matures. I think they should have set it as an Early access, and let it mature without the Production 1.0 judgement.

Listen, I've waited three years for this game. And I don't regret a penny of the money I spent on it. I am incredibly excited to see where the Devs take it.

Do I Think it was a mistake to make it online only, when there's no multiplayer? Yes. But will this sit on my Steam Deck and be something I casually master and get my face melted by over the next six months? Yes.

I'm not sure what that bar is. I don't really understand why the industry would rather see Face Melting Bro-Value Increasing Blood Baths over Story Driven, Entertaining, inner Child increasing action games. I think the team did a great job. And I bought it again on Steam JUST to make sure I left a good review.

Buy it. Play it. Love it. Let it grow. And let's cut the elitest nonsense out of our vocabulary. Sometimes a small studio produces something which is just... FUN... and I think SR has done that here.

If you don't want to give it a chance that's on you.

Just a quick note to the Developer.

If you want this to succeed, Offline is a must. I would also recommend that you go back and create something special for your Beta Testers... anyone who tested the game should get a free copy or at least some nifty Tester only loot. And be public about your goals for the title for the future. People knowing it's a living creation, and not a cash grab will help tremendously in the days to come.

DISCLAIMER: I have been playing since Pre-Alpha 1, before this was the game it is now. So, bear with me. I'll revise this as I go.

OCTOBER 2021: ☆☆★★★
POTENTIAL OF: ★★★★★

THE GAMEPLAY ★★★★★
This is likely one of the most accurate, and fun combat games you'll ever play. It's got a solid FPS engine backing it (Lumberyard) and solid colliders (no pun intended). If you want to Farm Nodes, Kill things, Jump from high places, and really feel like every stroke matters, this is right of there with For Honor and Chivalry.

THE LORE ☆☆☆☆★
What lore? There are some readable texts, and a mediocre main story quest that causes you to run back and forth across the game... constantly... but it has a LOT of room to grow. It has about as much lore as a typical survival game. I can see this taking on a VERY Elder Scrolls level story (Oblivion-esque) eventually.

THE WORLD ☆☆★★★
The map is solid. It's large enough. But the world is grey. It's missing a lot of the life and flavor that makes it more than a grind factory. I can see, again, them adding a TON of bright and dark content over the next few years which will make this an experience worthy of writing home about. That said, you spend a LOT of time running... a lot of time running... a LOT of time running. All things told, it's just going to be a game of getting them building out new experiences to liven things up.

THE PVP ☆★★★★
This one is more depthful. Yes, the game suffers from SERIOUS imbalances in who owns what zones. But this doesn't really effect any one player globally. You can still go everywhere, buy everything, and participate in every interaction. The Out-in-the-world PVP is available, though few actually use it on Camelot, the server I'm on. Rather, people are racing to Endgame to take part in the Battleground equivalent and then in the larger scale Wars. Wars are something people really only get to play in if they're chosen as a Mercenary by a short handed guild (who is participating in the War) or if you're in one of the Eve Online Style monolithic guilds (Companies). Again, I feel like they're going to expand on this in time with multi-group/multi faction dungeons and similarly large PvP style experiences.

THE ECONOMY ☆☆☆☆☆
The economy is garbage. Everything is priced wrong, and making money is incredibly hard to do. This is largely because Bots have flooded the market with insane amounts of materials. The mistake that was made here is that there’s no floor for selling items. Meaning you can lowball ANYTHING. This has resulted in a gouged market. Which is admittedly very discouraging to anyone who was looking forward to this aspect. If there was a minimum sell price for all items in the game, which matched a level and rarity curve this wouldn’t be a challenge.

THE UI ☆☆☆★★
There are a TON of missing UI features. And a bunch of bugs in the interface. Basically you have to work too hard for everything you need to do, everything is the wrong size, nothing can be moved, and a great many of the screens don’t work correctly. This will take time to fix. It’s a patience game.

SUMMARY
This is a foundational masterpiece. For these dedicated developers the sky is the limit. They can add a TON of amazing content and make this into an experience worth remembering. For now, it’s largely just grind. And gets mundane and boring after about the three hour mark per play session. As such, it’s attracted a largely toxic base of players who are looking for the next thing to mow down or troll. If they want this game to succeed in the long run it will need elements that attract a deeper experience.

This is everything New World could have been, and that Black Desert wanted to be and failed. And has more potential than ESO did. But it’s basically an empty shell waiting to see what kind of content people are hungry for.

If you want to get in on the ground floor, like action games, and have some friends to play with, then this is a great game. It’s basically 14th century Sea of Thieves without the boats right now. Time will tell what it becomes.

I have hope.

At the very least it’s something that will balance out the lore heavy experience of FFXIV or keep you busy while you wait for Blue Protocol.
