Kingdoms and Castles

Sooooo Kingdoms and Castles.
I've owned and played this game for a while now (since 2017 and I watched a german youtube video reviewing it before deciding to buy it) and it's just great.

My review will contain three parts.
1. What I like about the game and why I would recommend it
2. What I didn't like/what I miss in the game
3. My personal experience as it's a big part of my liking too

1. Why I recommend it:
Of course I didn't play this games for over 100 hours without enjoying it.
I love simulations of civilization and this one is just so realistic when it comes to solving problems (as long as you're not playing on peaceful because it's not too hard to maintain then), because there is always something to do.

  • First of all, you need food for your peasants.
  • Ressource wise, you should probably get stone and wood quite quick
  • then you need more housing.
  • Suddendly you need a tavern because they wanna have fun.
  • the moment you feel like you've settled all the problems, the dragon and viking attacks start, so you need defense
  • You need money to pay for the army and the balista/archer towers, so you need taxes.
  • for more taxes, you need more peasants.
  • then the peasants want a church, a bath, a library.
  • the first plague comes and you need a hospital
  • etc.

Of course there is also other games like this, but I feel like it is quite good ballanced in kingdoms and castles, because you get a good mix of doing what you need to do and doing what you want to do. You'll have a good amount of time to fill with building pretty or optimize the use, if you don't want to progress that quickly with your peasants and the game won't punish you to take your time - as long as you don't play on the hardest difficulty.

There is a big variety in buildings and ways of using them e.g. you can build small towers throughout your kingdom that have archers/balistas on them, or you can build a wall around everything that you don't want to get torn down.

I really love the soundtrack and the atmosphere including the graphic (its quite cute) and i could just play it all day

The updates have always made the game better. There is barely anything that is annoying or unnecessary

The game is quite cheap (in my opinion) for what you get

2. What I didn't like/what's missing:
There isn't that much that I didn't like, mostly features or things missing, but one thing I personally don't like, are the other kingdoms.
I've played 2 games with other kingdoms and new settling involved and besides of them dying to the hardest difficulty, thinking I killed them and then letting me decide whether they can continue living or not every 5 minutes, which can be annoying and unprogressive as they start disliking me through it, the ai kingdoms take your place to progress. It is sad that there isn't a way to have your own big island and one for every ai, because I personally don't want to start a kingdom, knowing that I likewise won't be able to reach 2000 inhabitants due to lack of space. Instead they should probably make ai's live on islands outside of your own area to progress on, as the normal land maps are small enough already
So I just barely play with ai's.

I wish the game would be able to process more peasants and bigger cities. I've started to use the bigger maps mod, as the normal game maps are quite small (please add bigger ones!) and now I have one city with 9000 peasants and it gets really laggy (of course, as they all run around and you could theoretically click on any of them, but I would love to play with cities that big, so if theres still gonna be updates, I hope that is going to be an improvement to map and kingdom size.

I hope that some mods (such as the district mod) find their ways to the main game, as they could be used really practically to show stats from only one district in order to understand better, where the problem for food/charcoal/whatever is coming from, because it is unclear sometimes.

I hope that there will be more enemies than just dragons and vikings, as you get kind of used to them over the time

I wish that fishing was more beneficial. I am currently using every fish in my current kingdom and still there is barely any food resolving from it.

I wish rivers and lakes were a more common thing and that they wouldn't have the deep water that you can't build over, because you can't really include the lakes into your walls like that. The greater maps mod has cool features for rivers and lakes.

Allthough these were quite a few points, they are rather specific and not really that big of a thing as the pros for the game are, In general, I love the game, and these points just come to my mind after over 100 hours, they wont bother you until like 20 hours into the game.

3. My personal experience
In 2017 there was barely any content so I had just one small kingdom which now had 1.2k population in the end and as the game developed, They added so much content that my peasants in my original world were unhappy because they didnt have all the new buildings (There also wasn't a witch's hut, wolves or fish in the map so i could barely do anything about the problems)

So I started a few new world in 2018 and another in 2019 with about 40 hours gameplay until then. The updates really brought so much life to the game that I even enjoyed before that so I really just waited for any update news all the time.
I built 2 kingdoms, each with about 1.5k peasants

I think I started my actual kingdoms in 2020 and since then I have just loved every bit of the game. My first kingdom in 2021 used up all the space it could till the last edge of the map ( I got about 6k inhabitants for that), but i felt like it was way too small for me, so I installed the bigger map mod and decided to build the biggest kingdom possible and at this point I am at 9k peasants at the moment an the game is really laggy, so I am unsure if I'm gonna finish it any time soon, on the other hand, there isn't that much left. Handling the kingodm also gets harder the further into the game you get, as you need to build farms in reach of eas part of the game, or else you'll need about 200 carts per market :/ )

Anyways for me, the progress of the game is very important for my review, but also the motivation that the devs had, to keep this game alive!

Thanks for reading and thanks to the devs for creating the game, I really love it!

OneShot is my favorite game - mostly because of the relaxing and cute style, music and characters, but the story of the game is just fun and good too!

fun to play with friends, especially because it is free and coop. You can also race against each other, but trying to beat a map together is really fun
