While the only common thing in Resident Evil 5 and its predecessors is the title, it is hard to argue that it is a fun third-person action shooter with a solid campaign and one of the most beloved time-attack game modes in the series.


Upon its release, Resident Evil 5 was a dividing game. It is undeniable that it completely lost any connection with its roots by going the full-fledged co-op third-person shooter way with zero horror elements, but it does a damn great job at it.

Co-op is an operative word, because both the hordes of common enemies and the bosses need teamwork. It also means that solo players have to deal with a mandatory AI partner, who is the bane of existence for some, or an unkillable aimbot for others.
Strangely, the gameplay feels balanced entirely for New Game+. This means that new players may not enjoy it as much until they beat it once—especially if they bought the DLCs, because those remain locked until the campaign’s completion.

Just like in RE4, the level design is linear, where the African shantytowns, the old half-abandoned laboratory complex, or the tanker ship fit the game’s theme like a glove, but the swampland and the underground caves feel like some rejected levels from Uncharted. (Especially with such ridiculous elements like an subterranean solar laser built from stone.)

The serious levels design (well, sans those middle parts) got some serious writing as well. The adventures of returning protagonist Chris Redfield, as he teams up with a local agent to stop an intentional biohazard outbreak in Africa are played straight, including some competent translation (for a change) and voice acting. While this puts RE5 even further away from its sibling titles, the entire package somehow clicks together as a great action game, which happens to bear the name of a franchise associated with survival horror games.

- Slightly jarring when opening doors (rarely go in one go and block one sometimes

+ Interesting opponent design (opponents other than the Baker family)
+ Realistic environment (could actually exist like that)
+ Unexpectedly well composed areas that you would not have expected in this game and not all in one game

- Game sometimes seems "empty" after defeating the opponents
- In the last third a bit too easy

+ You do not want it to end and at the same time you just want it to stop. Great!
+ The different areas do not attract each other, so there is virtually no time for boredom
+ Long enough (many users complain about the supposedly short playing time, but the game is designed to be enjoyed). If the game had been longer, the game mechanics would have repeated too often and bored the player. I think it was just the right length

+ Very clear recommendation to all horror game fans. Anyone who liked the old Resident Evil parts and Silent Hill will most likely like this game as well
