I had a lot of good things to say about this game but after it took nearly 2 hours to update a 2.4GB patch I had a lot of time to think about the game in it's current state as my frustration mounted between the dismal update speeds. That being said, I'm going to have to err on the negative side and not recommend this game. Keep in mind, the patch itself only took around 10 mins roughly to load, so it wasn't an internet issue. It was the verification process that took ages because as of update 1.0 it is still a pretty buggy mess.

Okay, lets start with the positives: great AI, world building, good gameplay and fun with friends. It is in every sense of the world a successor to the acclaimed SWAT 4 series and it does its job well. The maps are expertly detailed, the gunplay feels solid and impactful and the tactical aspect is pretty fantastic, as expected. The SWAT AI has seen massive improvements too with 1.0 and its pretty great how they've thought out how the AI could be helpful rather than a hindrance to the player like in former versions of the game.

Now, onto the negatives. Lets talk about the fact how the developer is just really absurdly inconsistent with keeping the community informed. At times they are excellent, providing detailed overviews of whats to come in new updates with gameplay footage and explanations in laymans terms, as to help the average player understand. But then, out of the blue, they'll go radio silent for MONTHS on end. This is behaviour I'd expect from amateur game devs, not a studio that has a solid reputation and thousands of supporters. This behaviour would have flown years ago when the game first entered early access. Its been literal years and the game is still in early access, but the devs have not shown a good commitment to improving their standing and keeping their community informed.

Next, what the ♥♥♥♥ is up with the enemy AI? All that work put into the friendly AI is frankly negated if the enemy can 360 blindfire and one tap your character when they are completely flashed. To put it nicely, the enemy and civvie AI in this game is a buggy mess. For all the improvements of the friendly SWAT AI, the game completely nullifies them by the lack of polish and work done on EVERY OTHER ASPECT OF AI in this game. Don't believe me? Check out the subreddit as well as Youtube; there are plenty examples of what an inconsistent mess the enemy AI has been. Frankly speaking, I am very let down by this considering the game is considered 'completed' at 1.0. This is acceptable for a game early in the development cycle NOT a game that has been in early access for several years only to be presented with a buggy mess like this.

Lets also talk of the lack of polish. While the levels of the games itself are very detailed and clearly have a lot of love put into them, the fact that much of the game lacks any real polish cannot be ignored. Simply put, the game just FEELS unpolished and janky, even with years of work put into it. The sad fact is, this inherent jankiness can be ignored if there was more love put into other aspects of the gameplay, such as the AI, but both of these problems in tandem just make for an unpleasant gameplay experience. The textures of the game are inconsistent, compounding the issues of lack of polish. The overall feeling is just...not great, even with years of development. Extremely disappointing as I've been closely following the development of this game for years and was extremely excited when it touted itself as a spiritual successor to SWAT 4. That being said, even SWAT 4, a 20 year old game at the time of writing feels more polished and smooth than this game does with it's next generation graphics.

All this to lead into my next point, which is that, as of 1.0, this game is a buggy, unoptimised mess. From weapons glitching through the walls to absurdly poor file optimisation, the game is just messy in every aspect. It is unbelievable that, even with a dedicated team working on this game and no other projects, they have no found a better way to get the game to update. It is absurd that a 2.4GB patch takes 2 hours because of poor file optimisation leading to slow verifying times. For 176HKD, I honestly expected a bit more. In the past year I've owned this game, I've found myself coming to it less and less because of its frankly awful load times; in the past week alone I tried launching this game TWICE for quick play sessions only to realise that the slow patch cycles paired with the buggy mess of a menu made it impossible to even join a lobby to play the game.

It is precisely these issues that make the game a novelty and unpleasant for new players to actually get into. With development progressing at such a slow rate, I'd expect most of the dedicated playerbase to continue to decline until this game becomes a forgotten relic unless the developer takes strides to improvement the subpar gameplay experience as a whole.

I know I've been very critical of RoN thus far, but it really isn't to say I expect a triple A experience from a developer clearly unequipped to provide one. But for ♥♥♥♥♥ sake, some communication with the community would allow for more leniency from the playerbase. The fact is VOID has neglected to do this, letting down the entire dedicated community and it is with a heavy heart I must say this game is just simply not worth buying at its current state. I was once a proud and outspoken supporter of the devs, constantly coming to their defence when people criticised them for various reasons online, but even now I am forced to say that they were right and I feel extremely let down over the years of development this game has seen so far.

TL;DR: At its current state this game is undoubtedly NOT worth buying.

Launching this game consists of restarting it at least 4 times consecutively so it "updates"
Multiplayer is mid TTK is slow and IW is trying to make us play Warzone in MP, maps are garbage
Story is pretty decent but not as good as MW2019
