I don't think Blockland is a bad game, and back when it was more popular it was a blast to play with strangers and friends, whether you were playing it as a vanilla sandbox, or modded it with custom gamemodes. However, due to time, lack of support, and the community itself, Blockland’s value and uniqueness has been significantly lowered. In 2012, they removed all interior maps, including the famous Bedroom map. While the devs did have their reasons, they removed something that not only many players had fun in, but was also a significant symbol for the Blockland community, like gm_contruct for gmod, or 2fort for TF2. In 2014, Return To Blockland (RTB,) the most popular addon loader for Blockland, was discontinued and it’s service shut down, making it harder to install mods for the game and some mods having compatibility issues. The last significant update to Blockland was around 2013, with nothing major being added to it after that.

We have seen newer or updated games being released that do some of the things Blockland did better. Garry’s mod, while doesn’t have the same sandbox structure as Blockland, has a larger community and better mod support than Blockland. Roblox, while it has it’s problems like copyright BS and being marketed towards kids mostly, has tools to build stuff at around the same complexity as Blockland and offers more advanced tools that can create custom games with more flexibility and flare than what Blockland can offer. Minecraft, while it’s sandbox is more limiting with it’s mostly 1 meter only blocks, has a much larger community with custom games around the same level of complexity as what blockland can offer, on top of having its own survival gamemode that is huge in terms of what it has to offer. In fact, back in the early 2010’s when the whole Roblox v.s Minecraft debate was going on, Blockland would sometimes be mentioned, being an underdog that could do somethings the other games couldn’t while also having a blocky and cartoonish aesthetic. But while Roblox and Minecraft have evolved, Blockland got stuck and is basically on life support.

Even if you think you can still play the game online with it’s low player base, the first thing you are going to probably run into is how out of touch the player base is. Most of them are people stuck in their edgy 2016 humor mindset and think building swastikas and having their server name say the n-word is still funny. It doesn't, it just makes the game feel more uninviting. Don’t even get me started on the forums.

Despite Blockland’s flaws, it still left an impact for many people on the internet. I would like to mention Brickadia, which is basically like a more modern version of Blockland. While still in Alpha, it has a very similar sandbox element like Blockland, and has a similar gamemode structure to Blockland. (it also has a less toxic community.) I say check it out if you are interested because it’s the closest thing to a frequently updated and supported Blockland experience you’ll get, especially later on when it gets more and more complete.

All good things must come to an end, but I had a blast while it lasted.

It's an absolute shame.
