Ask me to review this a few months ago and it would be a whole different story. Since then they've made it so much more balanced and less monotonous fetch-questy.
I still prefer the first game for a multitude of reasons, some examples being: In slime rancher 2 you are a hero who saves the day instead of being a normal person, there is way too much content compared to teleporters that are less accessible, and some parts of the graphics (namely leaving caves) hurts my eyes.
There are some better features, such as the general visuals and the material collecting.
I don't have the same desire to start up a new save like I did, and still do, in the first game.
Every character except the main one you speak to feels shallow compared to the first game, just existing to repeat the same lines and jokes. They don't feel genuinely worried about your wellbeing in the new area.
The tars are excessive, and it feels like slimes were sloppily placed in areas. I don't want to have to disable tar spawns just to have a reasonable time and not see slimes causing their own demise. At least in the first game there were only a few distinct areas I knew tars were common to spawn.

That being said, it is still a good game if not compared to the first. It feels like a lot more love has been put into it, which was definitely apparent during the entire early access period. Sometimes I just love walking around and headbutting slimes while they squeak. It's generally very relaxing (after the recent update that made it bearable, I don't know why it took that many months to realise the system was awful)

I've been playing this for over a year (426 days) through the website. I spent a long time addicted to the cookies, wanting to make the silly number go higher. Finally decided to buy the steam version for easier transferring between devices (I hate exporting and importing), though it did take about 15 minutes of steam to give me all 546 achievements my save file has.
Granny/10 would ascend cookies again.

DO NOT PLAY THIS IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE THE HIGH ENTRY SKILL LEVEL!

Now that that's out the way, let me explain how amazing this game is and how after multiple rage quits, I made it to 100 hours.

Firstly I started off naive and ignored all the negative comments saying the game was really difficult because I absolutely loved the concept and how it was implemented.
After playing for less than an hour, I could not stand how awful it was. Every few minutes I would die to something I couldn't fight back against, or took too long being hesitant that I was killed by the rain.

I then quit the game for multiple months...until Downpour came out. One of my favourite YouTubers, Skurry, started playing the DLC. I believe they were given early access, though that doesn't matter much. I watched them play through Gourmand and Artificer, slowly becoming more excited for the next videos to come. Around this point, YouTube realised I liked Rain World and started recommending me other people's playthroughs, as well as animations and tutorials. I watched them all, obsessed with Rain World content because of how beauiful and amazing the game looked, and how incredible playing it seemed to be. Only a few controls and you can do so much movement tech?

I decided to give it ago again, using all of my knowledge from the videos to guide me forward...and the difference was massive. I was no longer as scared of the threats as I had been, and I'd run at them fearlessly. Of course, quite a lot of the time I'd end up dying, but I was still learning.
I went camping at one point, and the "laptop" I was using couldn't handle any campaigns, so I played Sandbox instead. I set up a massive arena with multiple challenges and I went through it over and over again, increasing the difficulty.
By the time I got home, I was much better at combat than I had been, and I'd used a mod to change my keybinds for things to make it easier to play (The base controls are AWFUL on keyboard, DO NOT USE THEM)*.

I kept progressing through campaigns, though I could not have done it without the modding community. Due to many issues out of my control, there were some parts of the game that I could not play without hurting my own health. Areas containing darkness, certain critters, and large watery areas, would cause panick and cause real life symptoms, causing me to have to stop playing. So a huge thank you to mods like "Keep That Away From Me", "NoMoreFlashes", and "Let There Be Light", among many more for their amazing accessibility usages. I would not be able to play the game without these <3

I've currently completed all the canon ending of every slugcat except Saint (I don't want to do Saint, I will have to and I will hate it.) and I've been getting into expeditions, as well as playing a 100% campaign with my friend as Artificer and Rivulet in the Monk campaign.

Again, I cannot say this enough, this game is amazing. Ask any of my friends, or even strangers I've interacted with recently, and they will vouch for how much I talk about Rain World and its extensive lore. YouTube has stopped recommending me anything except Rain World content, and I've shared these videos so much that even my friend can't stop seeing it in his feed and he doesn't even play the game or seek out content from it.
The community is incredible and friendly, and I recommend watching some spoiler-proof guides. I played the game with full knowledge of the lore and watched multiple user's playthroughs, but I know that's not for everyone and may ruin the game.

* I recommend using WASD for movement, with E as the pick-up button, Space as jump, and I usually prefer to use / as throw though this can be changed.

Early Access Review
A majority of my playtime consists of me saying to my friends "I'll just finish this then get onto [Other Game] to play with you", and then proceeding to do 5 more things before remembering my friends are waiting for me.

I play this game differently to most people so my review won't be covering normal things.
Ignoring every mission, ignoring every task, whatever. You can spend hours in this game just...driving. Who cares if the bad AI decides it wants to ram into you, you're in a near indestructible car. Or maybe you're on a bike and can quickly slide to the side to avoid them. Want an extra challenge? Ride on a bike along a wall without falling off. Try to fall down large mountains without falling off. Just challenge yourself with driving.
I haven't actually completed the story, almost all of the hours I have in this game are Online mode. And quite a lot of them are just riding my bikes, primarily the Bati until I got the Shinobi.

Difficult to get started, but extremely addictive once you get far.
It's like Minecraft but flat with better movement and more items and more browser tabs open to look at the wiki for recipes.

Every time I get bored of any other game, I get on slime rancher to grind a new world. I've gotten very good at it, and I can't wait for Slime Rancher 2 to come out so I have some fresh content.
Amazing game, could not recommend more
