2024 Overall Review Score - Very Positive.

You just know that Sean will not stop with the updates and Community Missions until NMS achieves Overwhelmingly Positive status, and even then will keep going until every review is positive!

2022 Version 4.0 WayPoint / Inventory Update

>WellThatEscalatedQuickly.jpg<

Like just about everyone else I was surpised and confused by the changes to inventory system that came with Version 4.0. All my carefully arranged suit and ship upgrades were "gone" and my cargo inventory jumbled!? Nooo!

Combine this with HG's usual "Release Update First, Publish Patch Notes Several Hours Later" approach left a lot of people (myself included) upset and frustrated.

HOWEVER, after spending some time with V4 (and buying more tech inventroy slots for my suit and ship) I have mostly got back to having a good loadout. The greatly expanded Storage Containers, Ship and Suit Inventory, the customisable difficulty and crafting receipe guides do help to make the game more accessable for new and casual players.

I'm hoping that the changes to the inventory system pave the way for being able to auto-sort, filter and transfer items.

A solid update and overdue overhaul of inventory with a lot of potential, but unfortunately not one of HG's finest PR moments.

Its still a great game and a massive timesink :-)

2021 Expeditions Update

HG have continued to raise the bar, pushing out a series of FREE Community Expeditions during the year which have IMNSHO gently(!) nudged players into experiencing more of NMS than they might have done so on their own, with the lure of some exclusive time limited rewards including unique items such as The Golden Vector Fighter.

The good news is that if you missed these Community Expeditions that HG are re-running remixed versions of them during November / December 2021 so that you can earn those perks.

Compared to other games which are merely vehicles for endless paid-for (and sometimes pay-to-win) DLC packs, No Man's Sky is incredible value for money.

Virus Pandemic Update

Hello Games have continued to add more FREE content to improve the game beyond recognition and the original over-promises of the ill-fated launch. The latest Origins update has transformed the graphics again.

I've put over 150 hours into the PlayStation version of NMS during the virus pandemic; exploring a universe of procedurally generated planets and building functioning, working bases is such a great way to escape the confines of lockdown from the comfort and safety of your own sofa.

Original Review:

Excellent game for chilling out and exploring worlds; you can do more and take part in the community challenges, but you can still get plenty out this game just wandering around and literally admiring the scenery.

This game is made to be played from the sofa with a controller, a good supply of tea/coffee and biscuits and maybe a pen and pad to keep notes to remind yourself what you're supposed to be doing to counter being distracted by the urge to go see what's over that hill over there...

Despite the disastrous (if not almost fatal) launch, Hello Games have actually Done The Right Thing™ and stuck by their game, addressing issues and adding *ahem* "missing" features. They are still committed to improving the game further in response to feedback from their community. The game is not perfect and there is still plenty of scope for improvement, but it is getting there.

I bought this game to support the Hello Games and to hopefully encourage other Developers to treat their communities the same way.
