Gotta preface this review with a few items. Firstly, I am in my early 30's. I did not grow up playing this game, or any other other Final Fantasies. I love 14, and it's changed my life for the better and taught me how to be better human. The remake is a good game, but if you haven't had a significant nostalgia bump from playing the original, this likely won't hit you in the right spot. Most of the people I grew up with who played this religiously and spoke highly of it were weird. Like REALLY weird. They grew up to become the strangest, most twisted people I knew. One person still classifies his ex-girlfriends as final fantasy heroines. None of them have jobs or their sanity, and I'm beginning to think this game is what took that from them.

All throughout this playthrough I was saddled with tedious side quest after tedious puzzle after sidetrack after delay. The game has a great high level narrative but every single second you spent playing it you will wish you were just getting on with it already. There's all kinds of terrible long linear sections that don't progress the plot, have any meaningful encounters or dialogue or knock-on effects to the story and I get the sense that the devs were pulling every single trick out of the bag just to keep you playing for a little bit longer.

That would be great if I wasn't looking at a pick-n-pull junkyard for 80% of the game and a sewer for another 10% of it. Instead of being engaging, most of the tougher fights have been completely infuriating with how specific you need to be to counter them.

I realize I really haven't structured this in any particular way, but you know what? That's what you get if you play this game. Please excuse me as I go crawl through a vent for four and a half minutes only to learn nothing new about the story, characters or world as a reward. Or maybe I'll chase a creature for 20 minutes to find a pendant that has nothing to do with any characters that matter, and it won't be brought up again.

I purchased this with REBIRTH, and I am sincerely hoping for a break in this awful, long linear mess of a contrived heap of story. Perhaps it will make these hours feel somewhat worth it.

This is a weird recommend. I came into this game never having played FF7 or engaged with its story more than a passing glance. I plan to move on to playing the other FF7 Remake games at some point, and had to ask myself..


For me, 10 hours and exactly $24.99. This game took about 10 hours of jank japanese awkward-pause dialogue and lottery mechanics, with annoying random battles sprinkled in throughout, but it also gave me the background I feel I needed to care about the series.

There are some cool moments, some good fights, and I can say without a doubt that Zack is a lovable character most of the time. Like any other character in this game, he's 85% elipses and questioning things that are obvious like a Dragonball character, but the other 15% is pure platinum line delivery and badassery. I have a better idea of where Cloud came from, what Shinra does, SOLDIER's role in things, and I know what Jenova is.

We'll see how much of the setup from this title delivers in the remake, but I can say at $25, it's money well spent. I won't be completing the 300+ side missions or finding every secret, but $2.50 an hour was worth it.

Literally positively reviewing to cancel out one of the negative reviews from one of the many people who have no idea how to play and are angry at their own incompetence.

When I was young, my mom gave me a pet rock and let me paint it. My pet rock has a more competent PoE 2 build than most of those people.

This game is brilliant. Buy it. Play it.

This game is the absolute apex of arcade flight combat games. One of the best soundtracks of all time meshed with true calamity and the most visceral and satisfying dogfights have completely won me over.

I continue to look for ways to pay this dev team more money for more Project Wingman.

Buy the DLC too. More of the same.

Single Player Hunt Showdown with Destiny gunplay with heavy catholic vibes a la Blasphemous or Lords of the Fallen. You hunt the witch, and her minions hunt you. As your power grows, so does hers. Your conflict becomes more personal as it becomes clearer that she's scrutinizing your playstyle.
