Responsive dev team. This game honestly deserves more players.

I came into Wilds with high expectations; they were the team that put out World and Iceborne, after all. The story, though nothing special, was about on par with what I expected from a Monster Hunter game. It's not really a game which ever went story-heavy anyways. Go here, hit this thing on the head, go there, hit that thing on the head. Standard fare.

The new movesets, for the most part, are great. The addition of Focus really made the less accessible weapons much more appealing to newer players. Greatsword is one notable entry, being able to turn nearly 180 degrees to land a True Charged Slash with focus.

My main issues now come down to many small issues, which when added up, really detract from my desire to play this game.

1. Connection issues: I have had so many connection errors pop up when trying to either connect to a lobby that my friend is in, or trying to join SOS flares. It'll either be lobby was unavailable or just spend a good deal of time trying to connect, and then nothing. I know it's not my bandwidth, I'm able to stream 4k videos with no lag. I'm fairly sure it's a crossplay implementation issue. It may not be that big to some people, but the last thing I want to see when trying to play with friends after a day of work is a connection error.

2. The social system(s): following up from the connection errors, I really feel sorry for the intern who was put in charge of coming up with the social system. We have: 1. Friends. 2. Link Party, 3. Environment Link, 4. Squads, 5. Followers. There really isn't a need for this many systems for just trying to connect to your friends. Now, one of my biggest pain points in the social system: the Environment Link. Locking you and your party to a SINGLE biome was one of the most frustrating things I first encountered when playing with my friends, when the game actually decided to connect to the them. Granted, I'm not a game developer and know very little (nothing) about network and game development, but this one issue pulled a great deal of fun out of the "let's go explore and hit stuff we find on the head" aspect of the game. I want to hunt an Arkveld in the plains, then run over to the forest to beat up a Lala Barina without needing to disband my Environment Link, load back to my original biome, go to the new biome, and then reinvite my party members. It's extremely jarring and takes away much of the fun in exploring the "open world" of this game.

3. Overall optimization: This game feels very poorly optimized in performance, and in appearance. The game often has issues loading models in game, especially on the first load-in of the session, giving everyone the equivalent of PS1 Lara Croft chests, but everywhere. The colors feel quite muted and faded out, especially when comparing some of the monsters to their counterparts from World. These are smaller issues for me though, especially when compared to the connection issues mentioned earlier.

Overall, Wilds comes across as a step forward, but two steps back. The connected map letting you go from biome to biome, the Artian weapons letting you craft weapons tailored to your needs, the Sekiret carrying another weapon and a supply pouch which is periodically refilled, the hotkey/button combination to instantly put on your secondary mantle are all great additions, but they are unfortunately overshadowed for me. I find myself rarely, if ever, walking from map to map, especially when I can just open my map and fast travel there. The Artian weapons have unfortunately become the meta for many weapons from what I have seen, disincentivizing grinding for monster materials to build the other weapons.

I can't really recommend the game as it is in it's current state, especially if you're someone that plays mainly with your friends. I'd honestly just play World/Iceborne until these issues, if ever, are fixed.

It's just not worth playing if you're a new player.

Game content I paid for has been permanently removed, and has not been brought back despite dev promises. There's a general sense of "it's over" for me when I play. Crucible matchmaking doesn't feel any better, craftable weapons were removed, I suppose in an effort to force the players to grind more to get the roll they want. Eververse remains bloated as usual. It's probably easier to go play Warframe or something at this point. I wouldn't go as far as to recommend the First Descendant but it's there, I guess.

I really enjoyed this game but it's just no longer what it used to be.

If you want to know the story of the game, just go watch MyNameIsByf or something,

Early Access Review
Void Crew keeps getting better and better, adding more content and cosmetics, but small bugs remain that impact the quality of the overall experience.

It's Mech Souls. Fun, but hard. Hitting your head against a boss over and over while slowly learning the moveset and eventually beating it is one of the most satisfying things ever.

Game is fun but there's a really annoying jolt when moving while scoped down. It really throws off the aim point when trying to adjust for long range shots. Very fun otherwise!
