Doom Eternal is best singleplayer game I have ever played (OK, tied best with Amid Evil). I love games where every moment, you are on a knife edge between life and death and careless mistakes get you killed fast and I also love fast paced games that throw you in large levels filled with enemies where you have to rely on skill and nothing else to survive. Doom Eternal caters to my needs perfectly.

The game is very difficult, but that may have something to do with me playing on Nightmare difficulty for my first playthrough, but so far, I haven't died for something that wasn't my fault and its never taken more than a dozen attempts to beat an arena.

There have been a lot of complaints about this game comparing it to Doom '16 and how its not more of the same, but I found that game very easy filled with slow, easy to kill enemies and while it was fun while it lasted, it wasn't a memorable experience for me. In Eternal, all the parts of '16 that I liked have been greatly expanded and improved on and the parts I didn't have been improved or cut out entirely. the new platforming is fine I guess, I dont mind it, but I dont much care for it either. I would prefer some light corridor combat against low level enemies to act as a "breather" between the large arena battles. I would say thats the only point '16 has over Eternal.

With this game currently half off for the Quakecon sale, theres no better time to pick this up.

Fantastic game. First playthrough on hard took me 55 hours total (according to steam), but I wasnt going too fast. Here are some of my thoughts regarding the game:

All mechanics work flawlessly and are easy to learn but hard to master

all parts of the game are telegraphed well, theres no guesswork

levels are immersive and well designed.

The whole story and world is fantastic

stock controls suck. you need to rebind them to get any sort of enjoyment out of the game

bad graphics work in favour of the game for once. all shadows have pretty hard edges because of engine limitations. theres no guesswork as to whether you are in a dark shadow or not. in addition to this, the light gem on the bottom of your screen shows how visible you are

maps are hand drawn and leave a bit up to guesswork. encourages exploration. After the first three missions, the game really opens up and by the end of each level, you have learned the whole layout and you feel great

very creepy atmosphere in some places

level 3 can go suck a ♥♥♥♥

the later levels can get very big. if you explore enough, you will find everything, but if you truly are stuck, use a walkthrough. I used Taffer's thief walkthrough on a few occasions

Stock controls suck. thankfully its easy to rebind them

I used the NewDark patch as well as a graphical mod or two. it was a tad annoying to install, but it all worked no problem

Very fun. easy to lose track of time in.

Watch Civvie11's video on it

stop reading and buy the game. you can get it for around a dollar on sale.

tons of replayability

mods are supported

The protagonist, Garret is pretty smooth brained. you could see the events that were about to unfold a mile off, but you dont do anything about it

final mission was pretty bad. walk along a linear path, knock out or kill enemies until you reach then end, interact with an item and wait

seriously, buy the game

if you put unconscious bodies in a fireplace, they will die

in a few levels, important items are hidden behind secret doors. A few I stumbled on by accident, but some require reading books lying around to know how to open them or listening to patrolling guards to find out about. if you miss the dialogue or cant find the book, use a walkthrough.

when searching for something in the spider infested tunnels beneath the city, you will hear some singing. thats Raul. Raul is harmless and funny. Listen to Raul. What he says helps you out.

the game is fun, I guess

Very much deserving of being called one of the greatest games ever made.

If you have read this far without buying the game, you are an uncultured mouth breather who deserves to be euthanised.

This awesome game has a fantastic balance of balls to the walls action and creepy atmospherics (especially in episode 3) and is easily worth your money, however the final boss is a bit underwhelming as attacks aren't varied or interesting and the arena where the battle takes place is a bit cramped and doesn't allow for easy dodging. while the fight is unexpected and a neat idea, it comes off as rushed and forgettable.

Another problem I have is that the bone monks look like they are t posing and could do with idle animations (or more noticable ones),

My third problem with the game is that the multiplayer isn't great. not because the gunplay is bad or its completely broken but because there is no variety. there are a few maps, some way too big and some are pretty damn good, but there is only deathmatch, and for that reason, nobody plays it. if there were more modes, co-op and mod support, the multiplayer would be a lot better, but as far as I know, those 3 things are being worked on as we speak, so if you are looking for a good multiplayer game, you should probably wait a bit, but keep this game on your radar because it looks promising.

It may seem like I am nitpicking and being a bit harsh on the game, but this is simply because its easier to list the things that arent so good than the things that are. read any other review for that. DUSK has the best singleplayer of any game I have played this year and you should definetely get it for that, so stop reading this review and buy the game. then buy it for your friends. then write another positeve review so more people will want to get it because it is just that good.

Edit:
In this review, I didn't cover my favourite aspect of the game. the enemies you fight, and because nobody else seems to be talking about it, I guess I will.

The enemies in Dusk aren't braindead lobotomites who just run at you. Each type has a preferred method of attack, which means you need to learn how they work and the best way to take them down. this fits in seamlessly with the top notch level design making each encounter unique, challenging and require quick thinking and large amounts of skill in order to come out on top

The first episode has you fighting tanky dudes with chainsaws, wizards that shoot fireballs, goats that spit blood, scarecrows with shotguns and old ladies that throw ♥♥♥♥ing pitchforks at you. Each one of these enemies fills a specific purpose, whether its being a melee brawler, long range support, ambush enemies or cannon fodder

Episode 2 expands this roster with cannon fodder soldiers, tanky guys with fireball mechineguns that explode when killed, invisible enemies that are revealed when damaged and cowgirls (the Dusk equivalent of archviles) and turrets This expanded roster fits into the above categories and provide fun and unique challenges when combined with the top notch map design (except for e3m9. that map is a complete cluster♥♥♥♥ and gets kinda horrible on hard mode)

Episode 3 has with enemies like priestesses and bone monks, which are really just variants of chainsaw dudes and wizards, respectively and the roster is completed with the imaginatively named (and terrifying) horrors and bone balls

All these are intersting to fight an I really can't overstate how well designed they are and make the game such a joy to play. I have already told you to stop reading this review and buy the game so why haven't you? DO IT!

And yes, it pains me to leave a red thumbs down on a Dusk review.
