Я исследовал клиент Steam. В моём распоряжении была последняя рабочая версия для Windows XP и актуальная версия для Windows 7. В обоих случая я выполнил мониторинг активности клиента. И не заметил особой разницы. Те косяки, которые были до отказа разработки под Windows XP, по прежнему все в клиенте. В эти сборы информации о папках, одни и те же запросы по три раза (Half-Life 3 Confirmed), такое впечатление, что обработчик ошибок выглядит так:

Множество потерянных файлов. А система проверки установки... Что она вытворяет! Также оказалось, что дело даже не в том, что Chrome не поддерживает Windows XP, а в чём-то совершенно ином, так как до браузера даже не доходит.

Оказалось, что Steam перешел на новые костыли, завезенные в Windows 10 и другие ОС, включая Windows XP, в 2015 году вместе с Visual C++ 2015 Residstributable. Костыли представляют из себя набор "виртуальных" библиотек, которые не содержат то, что должна содержать библиотека, а являются неким перенаправляющим звеном к реальным библиотекам ОС. То есть Valve решил обращаться не к настоящим библиотекам ОС напрямую, а к вот этим костылям.

Я на днях шутил про альтернативный клиент Steam, но теперь его создание мне не кажется таким уж странным, а весь обоснованным.

Some Steam user says that users who use Windows XP buys nothing and to save Steam client workable on Windows XP by unprofitable.

Let's calculate! Steam statistics have reported at the last time about 0.35% Windows XP users. Total registered user in Steam: 125 millions (2017 year info, so it's higher)
125 000 000 x 0.0035 = 437500 Windows XP users.
Even if each of them spend only 1$ per year and Valve gets only 15% that's enough to hire an 16 developers to solve that elementary issue.

Also don't forget that the most of Windows XP users have a machines with other OS. Therefore users spend more then 1$. And they really may start think to change the side.

As you know, Valve stopped to support Windows XP and Vista. But also Valve has broken down a client. All right. On my PC was installed Steam client of 2013 year, I launched it and client worked well, but it started to load an update and after client was broken down with "steamui.dll" error.

Why Valve just didn't freeze a client version (about other features I will not write, Valve will not employe me anyway) to stay access for users to games we will not understand.
