Into the Cave

(Black/Death Metal)

Brazil

Albums:
  • Sex and Lust (2014)
  • Insulters of Jesus Christ (2018)

Into the Cave is a brazilian four-piece band that plays some old-school sounding black/death metal. It's not too hard to tell that they're going for that 80s filthy sounding death/thrash/bm sound, and yeah I'd say they pull it off well enough: both the harsh vocals, always aggressive riffing and drumming, plus the fairly raw production, it all helps make it sound just right. I'd say their second release is probably the better one (in my opinion at least), their debut is alright but all tracks are mostly just fine and no song really stands out, while their follow up has a couple of bangers with some personality to them. Still, both are probably worth a listen if you're into the genre, so if you'd like some more old-school black/death metal, give Into the Cave a try.

Nømadus

(Progressive Groove/Thrash Metal)

Ireland

Albums:
  • Axis Primordial (2022)

Nømadus is an irish quartet that plays a slightly prog mix of groove and thrash metal. Their songs usually come down to a groovy/trash riffing and harsh vocals, and then somewhere in the middle of the track the prog kicks in full force, and we get some really neat melodic sections. The rest of the music is fine, the riffs are cool enough, worst case scenario the vocals feel a bit too rough and out of place, but personally, the melodic guitar bits make up for it, they're the highlight. Then again there's also tracks where they mix all the prog/melodic groove/thrash together, and that sounds alright too. Hope I don't end up overhyping their music, they're not the new Gojira or anything, but they do have a pretty neat sound and deserve more exposure. So, if you like some melodic groove/thrash metal, consider giving Nømadus a listen.

Cacumen
(Traditional)

Germany

Albums:
  • Cacumen (1981)
  • Bad Widow (1983)
  • Down To Hell (1984)
These dudes are pretty blatantly "mom said we have Scorpions at home", but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The three full size releases from the band came out in rapid succession, so there really wasn't any major shift in their musical sound. That means aside from improvements in album mix quality, you pretty much know what to expect from 'em after the first few songs. Plenty of full rockin' type songs fill the ranks, with a hefty dose of obligatory 80s ballads mixed in for good measure. Acoustic guitars pop in for a couple tracks, and at one point a corny saxophone may show up, but generally speaking it's solid normal-trad German 80s metal. After these three albums, the group changed things up a bit and dropped a couple dozen more albums under the name Bonfire, though with that change they tried to be more "commercial" and lost a bit of edge.

Faithful Breath
(Trad / Heavy)

USA

Albums:
  • Fading Beauty (1974)
  • Back on My Hill (1980)
  • Rock Lions (1981)
  • Hard Breath (1983)
  • Gold n Glory (1984)
  • Skol (1985)

Their first album was pretty much 20 minutes of instrumental prog followed up with a 20 minute prog epic, kinda the standard spacey meandering you'd expect from 70s prog bands. Their follow up was a bit more put together, with a whopping *5* songs. Sure one is a 17 minute prog epic, but at least they started to add just a twinge more rock-ness to their sound as opposed to just straight up hippie jams. Rock Lions is around the time they shift more into a "Rock" band and for whatever reason start using a viking aesthetic, though sound wise it's nothing that Nazareth etc hadn't already been doing for around a decade at that point. Hard Breath went a little more hard rock, with a couple tracks that would fit in with a proto-Manowar album such as the album's opening track Killers on the Loose. At this point you may wonder why a band like this is in METAL weekly, but as with the previous band's entry here comes "mom said we have Accept at home". Gold n Glory and Skol take a hard turn once more - this time with both Accept's frontman Udo Dirkschneider producing along with the engineer from the Balls to the Wall album. Catchy dual guitars, masses of group choruses, and a slightly rougher vocal style really show the influence to the point of being a bit copycat, but again if you want off-brand Accept then it's definitely a solid pick. Eventually they'd change band names, which is probably for the best considering their dramatic sound shifting, and become the band Risk - much more thrashy and aggressive (aka better), but that's a band for another weekly.
