Now, this is a bit tricky. There are many types of bandits. Some might just rob you for some beans, or some drink. Some will just shoot you, and others may be "guns for hire". There is one simple way to see if someone is a bandit, see if they shoot at you. But on a serious note, take alook at what they are wearing as a bandit may wear some "dodgy" clothing (Welding Mask). At best, use the rags and make them into an armband, most people use that as a "not hostile" sign.
A hero is a person who will assist you, or not shoot you. An example is if someone comes up to you and ask you if you need anything (such as food). However, although heros may be friendly, don't expect them to walk up with their guns holsted. Expect for them to approch you slowley or tell you to face the other way. What you have to remember is this "A man can love his neighbor on a monday, and massacare him on a tuesday, unless society keeps him in order" - Duke of Wellington. In simple terms, they don't know you are friendly. I often have my friends take up positions inside houses on the upper floors incase they start firing, so just obey them and it'll be fine.
