A game conceived as a one of its kind sensory experience. The intro alone is already stunningly stylish, and I just run the game from time to time only to see it again. The gameplay itself is a basic schmup composed of 5 stages that deliberately avoids any frills, though there is a good variety of enemies, bosses and patterns to learn which keep the loop engaging and satisfying. This, however, is almost beside the point. Rym 9000 is a game that wants to be experienced foremost, and the shooty part seems just a way to keep the player in a state of maximum alertness, while pouring the gritty and frenetic, flashing visuals and pulsating music onto them. Both of which resemble nothing else really, and make for a trippy ambience focusing on the sensation of speed, flow and strangeness. The latter is compounded by unlocking log entries evoking an over-the-top story full of absurd clans, characters and cosmic entities inspired by sci-fi anime/manga. In this game the style is the substance, and is creative and unique enough to make this a viable proposition.
