Devlog 2: Battles

Welcome back Cosmonaut!

Although quite a few elements of the gameplay in Cosmic Cosmonaut are not related to combat, there will be a time where you will be required to defend your fleet in fierce cosmic battles.

As fleet commander, you command a fleet of up to 9 ships, carefully choosing your composition to maximize your strength. Your opponents will also have a fleet of up to 9 ships, ready to challenge you at every turn. These battles are in real time - making sure that there's always action on the screen at any time.

Targeting

You can take control of your ships' attacks, either by letting them automatically target enemies or by manually focusing fire on specific vessels.

Special Abilities

You can also use powerful special abilities that can turn the tide of battle, for which you can purchase ammunition to replenish these abilities and maintain a tactical advantage. As you progress through the game and complete challenges, you'll unlock new and exciting ones.

In the demo, you'll have access to one special ability. The nuclear missile. This devastating first ability deal massive damage to a single target, with a satisfying kaboom.

Devlog 1: Progress

Hey everyone! It's been a little while since I last checked in, so I wanted to give you a quick update on what I've been working on.

Quests

There's been made significant progress on the quest system, which will add more depth and direction to the gameplay. Quests for example can now have starting and ending conditions, and can respond to events in game.

There's also a quest target indicator next to your ship, so you never lose the way.

For more experienced players, this indicator can be turned off!

Trade

I've also been refining the trading mechanic, making it more dynamic and rewarding - as each trading port has it's own prices and available goods.

To expand the universe, I've added more planetary systems for you to explore, each with its own unique characteristics and things to explore.

My primary goal right now is to get a demo ready for you all to try. This will give you a taste of what the game has to offer and help me gather valuable feedback. All upcoming devlogs will focus on this process, so stay tuned for more updates!

Devlog 0: Seeds of Inspiration

A few years ago

It all began a few years ago during an open day at ESA ESTEC. The experience was surreal. Walking through the corridors of a place where dreams of space exploration are turned into reality was like stepping into the future. But it was the presentation by a Romanian cosmonaut about the Space Race from the Soviet Union's perspective that truly ignited my imagination.

Their words painted a picture of a world where the Soviet Union was not just a geopolitical entity, also talked about some of the stories and things that happened behind the scenes. I found myself drawn to the raw power and idealism of their propaganda. What if those posters, those promises of a utopian future, were more than just paper? What if they were real?

Quite unlike our own world of course!

The beginning

This is where the journey begins. A journey into a world where Soviet aesthetics meet interstellar space eplxoration. A world where the impossible becomes possible.

This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for the next update about the game inspiration and the first few systems I've implemented during the last few months!
