Its a well made game but the gameplay is just too repetitive, The levels just become a slog to get through as they introduce segments where its just a big open area and you have to kill every enemy, with 2-3 waves. The linear levels are much more fun and I wish the game was just that.

A decent game. Starts strong with top-notch environments, visuals and sound design throughout. But beyond the promising intro and stylish design, you're left with a pretty severe mid-game slump where the poor map layouts, lack of player progression/upgrades and overall underwhelming gameplay can't be ignored. It's quite telling that only about 10% of players finished the game on normal difficulty. 40k fans will definitely get a kick out of this for a while, but the Warhammer flavour alone will struggle to keep you engaged for the whole game.

It's clear to see that the devs are very passionate about 40k and are absolutely capable of "doing Warhammer", so I genuinely hope that they can make some kind of follow-up that manages to improve things on the gameplay side, but as it stands Boltgun is firmly style over substance.

Really fun in the beginning and I can see a good game here. But there are two things which drag down my final verdict.

1: Dumb AI. I will give three examples. The first one happened so much to me that I stopped taking the enemy in question seriously. It's none other than the Chaos Space Marines! He will attempt to throw a grenade at you but half the time he kills himself with it. Either by it bouncing off the wall back to him or most aggravating, walking towards the blast zone while he is outside of it. Second is the Aspiring Champions who will charge at you with relentless fury. I jump to another platform with a clear road to it so I know he will come that way. But it's happened a few times he just decides to wander off (taking a longer way I presume). This is quite a shame, because when there pathfinding is correct they are some of the most dangerous enemies in the game. And lastly the Lord of Change, a greater daemon of Tzeentch renown for cunning and deception. Only to be outdone by me standing on highground with chest height cover. This will make it forget you are there. He will not attempt to attack you or even use its teleport skill. All the while genting blasted by me as I slowly chip away its health.

2: Most maps are too simple. This game markets itself as an “Old School Boomer-Shooter” But the map design just screams modern FPS. It's almost impossible to get lost and even with the Color Keys. Their linked door is almost always close by. There is not much in the way of creatively finding ways to progress. The only map that changes it up is “Grand Elevator”. That level was the only time the game expected you to use your brain to advance and if I needed to give scores to the levels that one would be on top. (edit, also the Tzeentch Maze)

Even after me being critical I want to Make clear that If they make a sequel I will be interested. There is a good game here and maybe you will enjoy it. But for me it needs to make that crucial extra step.
