Good game ruined by bad performance even on a 3080ti. Needs some work to smooth out and then it'd be playable.

I'm coming from Against the Storm, which I loved and it made me look for more supply chain heavy base building RTS games that are more thematic and less of a spreadsheet, so I landed on Manor Lords and Farthest Frontier. ML felt so half baked I gave up pretty quickly, but I've sunk some hours into FF and definitely like the bones of what's there. It has some significant technical and design flaws though.

Technical: there was quite a lot of screen tearing, the performance overall seems pretty poorly optimized, and most importantly - every time you click a building, the entire game freezes for half a second. Even mousing over a building in the build menu causes a short freeze.

Design: the game puts critical resources out of reach far too often, forcing the player into a trader-heavy strat. Unfortunately, the traders themselves are an RNG clown show, so relying on a trader showing up ready to buy what you happen to have, and also selling what you need, and also not selling it at an inflated premium for some reason, means you can be left sitting around while the game more or less stonewalls you. Can't shoehorn the player into a trading focus and then have the traders be so unreliable. I'm not suggesting it do away with different biomes having different resource strengths, but it needs tweaking. I finally found a clay pit in year 12, a hike away from my settlement. I finally start farming clay so I can upgrade my town to level 2, but you need 200 clay and they were harvesting it with agonizing slowness - it was going to take years to be able to get enough to upgrade to level 2. It didn't help that, arbitrarily, there are six worker slots for the clay pit but you can only use two of them. UI, it's a little unclear why they show you some resources along the top, but for the rest you have to open a separate window. Just have everything under a category appear when you mouse over it at the top, easy.

But like I said the bones are good enough that I kept playing and am looking forward to a finished/fixed product. Some raiders attacked, and since I had been playing a "figure it out" game and hadn't really built defenses beyond a single guard tower, I figured it was over and I should start a new one. But over in the direction they were attacking from, I had a lone hunter shack in the woods, with Myra living alone out in the wilderness hunting deer for the settlement. When the raider band passed through her woods, instead of running away, to my surprise she immediately turned her bow on the raiders and started picking them off. They went into town and raided the storehouse, which was just in range of the guard tower and another hunter, so only three of the raiders escaped (though they took my gold and some other stuff). On their way back out through Myra's woods, she sniped two more of them. The lone survivor is traumatized to this day.

6.5/10, could be a 8.5/10 with significant technical improvements and balance changes.

This is probably the only city builder that I enjoy playing. Everything is very much on the macro level - no faffing about with little bits and pieces, you just play and sort of switch off a bit.

If you're into micromanage-y, highly involved city builders you might not enjoy this, but for me this was the perfect balance between resource management and sandbox.

Guh... I feel like I'm just struggling with the food system. I find the game more frustrating than relaxing. I don't enjoy it.

I you are looking for a challenging city sim this is your jam. I am sad to say that I just don't play it any longer. There are a lot of very good systems that create interdependency on other systems so growing carefully and planning are essential but whether it's a balance issue or my own ineptitude I just don't care for it. There are lots of positives but this game just isn't for me.

I don't recommend.

Its a pretty good game but not very optimized.
