Also another note on the name to add to what people have said, notice that it's FRENCH Sudan. The modern Sudan was British at the time and not to mention the other sub-saharan colonies so calling it French Sudan would distinguish it. It's like the Dutch East Indies only being a part of the full "East Indies" which would typically include Malaysia the Philippines etc. or even "the Indies" which was east Asia and India more or less, though used a bit loosely from person to person. The term Sudan was used in much the same way as just a term for sub-saharan Africa

In case anyone thinks this is a meme. Apparently "Sudan" derives from the Arabic term "bilād as-sūdān," which means "The land of the blacks." It was an all encompassing term used by North African Arabs in the late medieval period to describe the land in Sub-Saharan Africa straddling the desert. This is why even though it's quite the distance from modern day Sudan, it shared a similar name. Idk why, just got really interested in researching this all of a sudden so here you go
