It was neat to see reflection gell, but I found I was able to beat the puzzle without even using it.

First I thought what a pain to place the laser blind. Then I realised, that I was wrong and you can adjust the laser by looking at the target. This was fun.

Yes, reflection gel and lift are unnecessary.

Could try putting the laser receiver onto the upper or lower level to force using portals and gel together. love reflection gel
