I've unfortunately had to sacrifice the illusion of the techs being tied into the armor itself completely, but this way they're applied in a much more clean manner so to speak and it also allows for people to swap out for other techs while wearing the Protector's set without needing to use the tech disabler patch.
And as a side effect, it's weaning me off of using both the Spelunking EPP and Augment Slots for Armor mods, since none of the gear from Starforge makes use of augment slots. Go figure.
