UNSC Orbital Elevator - Anchor component

Description
The Orbital Elevator, also called a space elevator or the tether, is a colossal structure utilized on all major human colonies prior to the Human-Covenant war. It can transport people and goods from planet-side to high orbit (and vice versa). This is the Earth-side part and typically the first part constructed.

Once a human colony has become productive and begins to export massive amounts of goods off-world, Orbital Elevators are installed. With tendril rails miles and miles long, reaching far out of the atmosphere and out of the major gravitational pull of the planet, the scale of the elevator is an impressive feat of engineering. Harvest had seven such elevators to export food, which served as vital means for evacuating the planet when the Covenant attacked. However, the elevators are highly vulnerable to attack and, if sufficiently damaged, will crash down and cause wide-scale damage.

- - - Earthside Terminal: Roomy center of ground-side operations. Lots of storage and small meeting rooms allowing for commerce and easy movement of goods, as well as being able to shelter a large number of people in an evacuation. Has heavy security doors and shutters on the windows.

The elevator is actually quite smooth and safe, using light armor rails and 4 non-friction wheels with hydrogen thrusters to move the platform. The car can be locked down on Earthside and in Orbit, takes about 2 minutes to make a full trip, and can seat over a dozen people. This model is based on the New Mombasa elevator seen in Halo 3: ODST.

ok I get it now

I tried to make it very long one on 120 km world

First: you build the 1km Tether Component about how long you want to build it into space.

Second: place the Orbital Station Component on end of the 1km Tether Component.

Third: copy the whole thing (CTRL C) the 1KM and Orbital station and place it on the Anchor component.

there you go

That worked perfectly. Thank you! :)

Someone said the problem is actually that the elevator cart needs to be converted to a ship once disconnected, try that.

Has anyone figured out how to mess with the wheels enough to make the elevator move? Nothing ive done has allowed movement.

Fell: That mod will probably make an elevator much more performance-heavy, but we'll see. Just having to add a TON of higher quality models to a structure so tall that already causes problems will probably make things worse.

Benj: This is happening because I made this before the wheels update. You'll have to play with the wheel settings.

I've Made The Elevator But If I Start Going Above 10+ M/S It Starts Breaking The Tether... Am I Doing Something Wrong?

Well, it could carry smaller vehicles (wheeled), as aircraft would need more room to get into the cradle.

Just in case, I will set up antiair defences. I saw a mod called 'gravity well generator' and instantly pictured myself watching as ships fall out of the sky.

I have recently seen a mod which adds magnetic wheels... in case this no longer works.

Fell: It might be the vehicle's wheels which serve as coasters, this was made before a huge update to the wheel blocks.

As to the hollow elevator, I don't think I could make one big enough for this elevator. My newer model, when I get around to making it, will either have multiple carts of this size or one much larger platform to allow large amounts of cargo or some vehicles to be transferred to orbit. As such, no, I didn't test for stability carrying anything loose, it just carries cargo in containers and people.

Took a week, I think? I even published it before it was technhically ready, originally it didn't have a proper orbital terminal. Probably about 2-3 weeks to perfect, as much as it could be anyway.

No, I have not. PLENTY of people have rammed the elevator themselves, but I was having trouble with just the elevator slowly eating my RAM so I decided not to try it.

Yes, fairly certain that I removed all green blocks.
Sigma 24 Jul, 2018 @ 1:59pm
Yes, I did remove the green blocks (well the ones I believed to obstruct), although I don't remember if I removed all of them, so I will have to try again later.

Mr. Evan, did you ever try and create a more hollow elevator carriage or container for transporting ships/vehicles? Just curious if you had tested it for stability with collisions.

In other words, whether or not the vehicle locked to the platform shook itself apart against its surroundings, up to and including fiery-catastrophic failure?

How long did this take to make? (I assume you didn't place each block separately, for that would be inefficient).

It takes two minutes? I thought that the maximum speed of vessels was about 100 m/s?

Last question: Have you ever had any ambient/npc vessels bird-strike any part of the structure?
