Starting Traits Remastered

Description
This mod replaces all lame starting traits such as phlegmatic or sanguine. Who cares about +5% campaign line of sight? In their place are new traits that that adds more variation, challenge and fun to the campaign experience.

      Some traits are are showcased in the screenshots and a full trait list is available here.[docs.google.com]

Traits that offer no gameplay variety, are pure penalties, are too similar or are simply dull no longer appear in the recruitment pool (e.g. irresolute, easily distracted, melancholic). Pros/cons traits have been rebalanced so that the positives actually are worth the negatives. The appeal of picking a character with a maimed leg is now that the lord/hero is a more defensive fighter to compensate.

Reinterpreted and remastered almost every innate trait to encourage variety and new playstyles in campaign and battles (e.g. the tongue-in-cheek "Handsome" is now "Stalwart" and is a good pick for peacekeeping and defense). All changes are meant to preserve immersion and be loreful. You will no longer receive blind archer heroes and traits may grant a special skillpoint to reflect upon the character's background - knights receive the Knight's Vow skill and necromancers Raise Dead.

Legendary Lord traits are refined in this companion mod. It is an excellent add-on mod to STR that further enhance and dynamize the campaign experience. Traits caused by campaign events are unfortunately outside of this mod's scope as they are largely scripted.

ALL of the remastered traits are available to the AI and their advantages will be used against you. This fully preservers the balance of power and the difficulty curve, but you could argue it's a double edged sword: while you get more useful lords and heroes and more frequently, so do your enemies.

The main difference is that the remastered traits create new and exciting scenarios. One example is the trait Grim Resolve, while very rare, means you or the AI can now find and recruit a champion who out of bravery or foolishness will fight to their dying breath. This will allow for some glorious last stands that befits Warhammer. Do note however that certain items or skills may become redundant e.g. a character who is unbreakable needs no increases in leadership. Legendary Lords remain the absolute best picks as they are technically immortal in the campaign and 1v1 give any other lord/hero a right spanking.

The mod is highly compatible with the vast majority of mods on the workshop, including large overhauls like Steel Faith. While this mod can be combined with mods that also adjusts traits and skills, this will often result in a mishmash of my and their effects. If you wish to use both mods at the same time you will need to contact that mod’s author as I cannot do anything about how they’ve designed their mod. While the mod is technically save compatible, you are advised to only use it for new campaigns because it removes all the old vanilla traits.

REQUESTS FOR A SEQUEL MOD: I'm greatly honored by all the requests for a version for future WH games but it is unlikely to happen. The mod's scope and variables would effectively triple and in turn require thrice as much time and energy to maintain and balance. Not to mention that I still want to provide regular updates, tech-support for users and listen to feedback. I won't say never ever and I'm keeping all my design notes. But for now you're invited to check out my other WH2 modding projects instead.

You sir are the man! That fixed it up very nicely!

@FraggenDragon
Those two mods should be fully compatible so that suggests a local issue on your end.
And since it is a CTD, that would suggest corrupted data or some unknown conflict.

This solution became standard for WH2, you can try and see if it works with WH1:

1. Navigate to your userprofile AppData folder (make sure hidden folders are visible in Windows) (alternatively type %appdata% into the explorer adress bar and press enter).
2. Head into Roaming.
3. Double-click on the folder called The Creative Assembly.
4. Delete the Launcher folder if it is present. This will remove any corrupted or old launcher data.
5. Unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod.

Give that a spin!

Can't seem to load this mod along with Legendary Lords Remastered without causing the game loader to crash. I can load one or the other with no problems, but not both. Any ideas? Thanks for the work on these mods in any case!

@PIXY_UNICORN
Cheers!
I should mention that you shouldn't give up your hunt. The WH3 traits are so atrocious that other authors have followed in this mod's footsteps. Though they only do lightweight tweaking to existing traits instead of fully overhauling the trait list. But any port in a storm, so I'd suggest searching around with the keyword "traits" in WH3!

Hi @FrostDemise
Thank you for the quick response!
I completely understand why you cannot invest such time and energy!
Thank you for all your hard work with this and your other mods!

Hi! Thanks for the interest PIXY! I wanted to write a quick to-read-reply but it turned into a whole paragraph:

I am interested for sure, but I definitely cannot invest the time and energy that such a big project would require (at least not in a way that would be to my tastes or without half-assing things). You have to remember there is now a trilogy's worth of characters, stats and abilities, and there is also incredibly compounding complexity attached to that. Thousands of db-entries would have to be referenced. Every time CA moves a column in the next 4 years worth of updates, the mod would be bricked and I would have to look for needles in a haystack. As a solo modder whose only payment is having fun making stuff, it would be just a nightmare. I could wait until the very end of the game's lifecycle but odds are that we'll all be moving on to playing WH40K total war instead.

Hey @FrostyDemise !
Do you have any interest in creating a version of this mod for Warhammer 3?
As the vanilla traits seem to have become rather lackluster again

This is for WH1...
