But the way I saw it was-
The reseachers designed a fancy light weight space interceptor, made it go as far as they could as fast as it could... a few years later some fighter mechanic said "Hey maybe we can get one of these fighters to carry these fancy new torpedos!". and they straped this big, clunky single-shot torpedo tube on, but the launcher was so heavy the acceleration was way to slow to get away from the enemy ship after it fired. after stripping everything they could they got it to Almost the same acceleration, But it still burned more fuel so couldn't reach quite the range...
years later when it came time to upgrade the bombers, they started from scratch again and were able to get a ship that filled both roles better than either could alone, at the price of being a bit bigger... and so the heavy fighter was born...
