Render the game like its supposed to

DSR Advantages:
*The game runs super smooth with good FPS
*Graphics are rendered higher (how they are supposed to look)
*Graphics are filtered
*Far less blur
*No haze/grain
*Steam screenshots look great

Render the game like its supposed to
*This method only applies to Nivdia card owners.
*Can be applied to any game according to Nvidia
Probably works for other titles as well

Titles such as Final Fantasy are upscaled by default as a result look and or run bad.
The solution to this is Nvidia DSR it renders the game in high-res then downscales it to you native resolution.
I hope this guide will be of help to somebody, to be able to enjoy this beautifull game even more.
About Downscaling
Games such as the Final fantasy Series are ported by Square Enix from Playstation 2 to the Computer. Because Playstation 2 FFXIII/FFXIII-2 renders the game in 720p for Television monitors the ported computer game upscales it to 1080p, which in turn means that even if your resolution is 1080p your're still seeing 720p.
And alot of graphics even on Ultra settings look blurry, especially in the distance.
The solution to this is to use downscaling/downsampling, the same technology Playstations and Xbox use to render the game at a higher resolution.
Alot of people use a program called GeDoSaTo by Peter "Durante" Thoman for this purpose however this game will crash after playing for 2 hours espesially during loading and or saving, because it relies on and uses injection which can make a program unstable. However GeDoSaTo is a great program with alot of features that was created to improve ported games. But atleast for this game i find it too unstable.
Therefore its better to use the Nvidia driver which has the downsampling functionality already optimized and built-in.
In the control panel it is called Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). It renders a game at high resolution then downscales it to the native resolution of the game.
More about DSR here: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/dsr/technology
DSR Advantages
  • The game runs super smooth with good FPS
  • Graphics are rendered higher (how they are supposed to look)
  • Graphics are filtered
  • Far less blur
  • No haze/grain
  • Steam screenshots look great
Guide how to use DSR
Depending on your setup you can choose between running the game in 720p resolution or 1080p. DSR will then use the render resolution of your choice and downscale it to 720p or 1080p.

Enable DSR
1. Open the Nvidia Control Panel
2. In the left menu select "Manage 3D settings"
3. Under the tab "Global Settings" click DRS - Factors
4. Choose how many times the native resolution (Resolution the game runs in)
Example 2.00x and 4.00x for 720p native resolution
Example 3.00x for 1080p resolution
See below how you can calculate this
Note: you can also choose multiple (stack them)

The following render resolutions are supported
  • #render resolution 3200x1800@60
  • 2.00x (1080p Native resolution) #render resolution 3840x2160@60
  • #render resolution 4480x2520@60
  • #render resolution 5120x2880@60
  • 3.00x (1080p Native resolution) #render resolution 5760x3240@60
  • 4.00x (1080p Native resolution) #render resolution 7680x4320@60

You can calculate it as follows
Example 2.00x+4.00x720=4320K (7680x4320@60) Render resolution
Example 3.00x1080=3240K (5760x3240@60) Render resolution

Choose the smoothing
5. Click DSR - Smoothness
Set it to whatever you like:
decrease it the image will become more aliased (jagged edges)
Increase it the image will become more smooth

Optimize settings (optional)
*Note:optimizing these settings varies on the capability of your graphics card adjust accordingly.
Settings below are for atleast a GTX 650 Ti or higher.
6. Within the Nvidia Control panel go to the Program tab
7. Select or add Final Fantasy (ffxiii2img)
Set the following settings
8. Play the game in its full glory!

Lines with a hastag # are commented out and will be ignored. For example at ## Rendering Resolution the line renderResolution 3840x2160@60 isnt commented out and will be used. You can just go ahead and try this config to see how it works for you.

I searched for some GeDoSaTo settings for FF13-2, and i've found this:

"## Rendering Resolution
# can't select res in-game so write it here
clearRenderResolutions
#renderResolution 1920x1080@60
renderResolution 3840x2160@60
#renderResolution 4480x2520@60

## Anti Aliasing
# MSAA sample count, default 4, other options: 2, 8
# higher = higher performance impact
# MSAASampleCount 4
# Enable coverage sampling (CSAA on NV, EQAA on AMD) if HW supports it
# (improvement for small performance hit)
# enableCoverageSampling false

## Shadow Resolution
# 1 = default
# sensible values: 2, 4, 8 (extreme)
# higher numbers = larger performance impact
# shadowScale 2

## Required settings, don't change
injectPSHash 1329c9bf
maxScreenshotParallelism -1
forceRenderRes true
presentInterval 0"

I've found how to put it in the program but there's a thing i don't understant yet: do i have to remove the #'s ? Or do I juste have to copy/paste it in the program & save ? Thank you again for your help !

Hi Brams of course i can help you what do you need to know? GeDoSaTo has selectable built-in presets. These presets hold standard configurations for different titles such as FFXIII. You can further edit your GeDoSaTo config, for example to use a different Render Resolution et cetera. It all depends on the configuration you've set up in GeDoSaTo and the hardware specifications fo your machine.

I tried but I didn't find yet a good configuration (I don't know much about gedosato too...), so if you can advise me something about it, i'll gladly accept it :D

Your welcome Brams perhaps you could try out GeDoSaTo to see if that can serve as an alternative for you.

Oh, ok. So there's no alternative for us ? Thank you for your concern ! :)

Unfortunately your GPU isn't supported. List of Nividia GPU's with DSR support: https://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/dsr/supported-gpus

Hi ! I have the same problem as Yaacob. I have a nVidia 610m and I don't have the DSR settings on the panel... Thanks for the help !

What happens if i dont have the dsr settings in the global settings? Im using gtx850m if that makes any difference.
