Indeed, Quince. One of the biggest disgraces of the commerce and science. Our world should be a different place.

The tower was also part of Tesla's experiments into the distribution of wireless electricity. If expanded and developed this could have provided much of the world with cheap, almost-free electricity. This was not appreciated by existing industries and their welathy, influential owners and so his work was discredited and marginalised. As an example, when working at Pike's Peak in Colorado his high-voltage experiments would not only illuminate light bulbs placed into the ground (using conductivity of the ionosphere and the ground itself) but also would consistently short out the dynamos in a power station... six miles away.

It as an early wireless transmission station designed by Nikola Tesla in New York in 1901-1902. He designed it to transmit messages, telephony and even facsimile images across the Atlantic to England and to ships at sea busing the Earth itself to conduct the signals.
