Once upon a time, there were people that didn't have mustaches.
Then the dinosaurs came and ate them because they did not have proper facial grooming standards.
And thus began a long war between dinosaurs and people with bad mustaches.

To make a long and rambling story short, dinosaurs eventually invented muttonchops, but we found giant rocks in space and claimed their facial hair as a spoil of war.
