Super 8 Sedan [Vehicle]

This addon includes a functional version of the 1941 Packard Super 8 Sedan made for my Observer Spy set.


This addon was prepared a ways in advance, and took a lot of research and experimentation to get right. In fact, I started work on this addon back in September, and worked on it when I was able into October. Tutorials/Resources on vehicle creation are quite scarce. While the source developer wiki(thank god it exists) was helpful, it came down to blind experimentation at the end.

The model itself required a complete overhaul. The original was made purely as a cosmetic filmmaking prop, not a functional vehicle. It was also the first vehicle I ever made, and was quite rough around the edges. I stripped down the body and threw out the interior, and then rebuilt it piece by piece. A lot of the materials and textures were thrown out as well. The car has been optimized heavily for GMod, introducing LODs, Shadow LODs, and cutting the material count down to 7(from 13).

I was unable to get everything I wanted in this release. I was aiming to have passengers and custom sounds. Passengers, as far as I can tell, is a mysterious feature that I can't wrap my head around. Sound effects are labor intensive, and I probably wouldn't be able to do better than the stock buggy/car sounds. I may tackle these features later.

-A Super 8 style sedan, based on the Packard Super 8 circa 1939-1951. It draws upon various models/styles of the Super 8, but it is inspired heavily by the 1941 version. It's been recreated in TF2's style, as it was originally used to promote a set of TF2 items.

-You can access the vehicle via the "Vehicles" tab, under "Vehicles".

-For whatever reason, I can't figure out how to make a custom icon for my custom vehicle.

-It has a functional steering wheel and speedometer. The steering wheel rotates based on the direction the vehicle is turning. The speedometer turns based on the speed of the vehicle. The speedometer will likely never go above ~50 mph, mainly because most HL2 vehicles are capped at those speeds.

-It uses a tweaked version of the jalopy vehicle code.
