The famous machine gun of the Heer during WW2, built off the earlier MG34. The rate of fire was so high in fact, that replacing barrels on the field became necessary, and the barrel shroud feature an aperture on the right side for easy acess.
The MG42 proved a phenomenal weapon, and after the war remained in use with numerous armies, influencing the design of notable machineguns like the M60 and FN MAG / M240, and even to this day remains in use, with the Bundeswehr using a modified version called the MG3, chambered for NATO rounds.
