8433 Arclite Fighter

Description
INFO UPDATE:

BLOCK I UPGRADE (OPTIONAL):

For those interested in additional thrust, as well as a hydrogen tank for temporary increased thrust power, I have come up with a round-about solution. screenshots should be uploaded along the screenshot slides.

essentially, a 'thrust' module is built onto the end of the connector as a large additional thruster. the thruster component features no armor at all, but because it is an extension, it's destruction will mean very little to the integrity of the Arclite.

make sure you build the connector as shown in the screenshots, and make sure the connectors are both of the same ownership (otherwise they won't connect). note that the second connector is still part of the ship; unlocking the connectors will not cause the module to disconnect (atleast that's how it's planned out. if you remove the armor blocks around the connector you can make it detachable, but the thrusters located on the module won't operate).

VERY IMPORTANT: TURN OFF THRUSTERS 46, 47, 48, 49. THESE ARE THE L/R THRUSTERS LOCATED BEHIND THE CONNECTOR AND WILL DESTROY THE MODULE COMPLETELY IF LEFT ON.

'why not remove the connector completely?'

the conveyor ports on the original connector is important in linking the left and right halves of the Arclite together. so that's a big no no.

if enough people need it, i can also upload the module as a standalone blueprint, but i don't plan on doing that atm (maybe more of my designs will use it, and if that happens i'll do it anyways).

hopefully this module will solve any "acceleration" issues people might have.

================================

Vanilla, Hydrogen-Thrust Powered Fighter.

Survival Capable.

Tested for Moons and Space only (cannot fly in Atmosphere)

================================

Cockpit Controls:

1 - Gatling Guns (2x420)
2 - Rocket Launchers (none by default)

================================

Additional Information:

there are 4 half-built rocket launchers on each side of the cockpit. these are for aesthetic purposes and do not function. if you intend on using them, you can remove the armor blocks directly in front of them and weld them up - that should be enough to make them work.

the arclite is built from heavy armor, which is actually probably a mistake on my behalf. as a result, it is much heavier than it needs to be, and accelerates slower than one would hope. however, because the parts are segregated on two wings, technically the aircraft should still fly without a significant problem unless both sides get destroyed.

The Light armored conversion, Named "Widow", is now available.

A good pilot can increase survivability. That's the trade off for using lighter armor. It's a good plan.

@Abyzmi, the appearance will be identical; the only difference so far is the armor type. reducing weight goes a long way in fuel efficiency (or so i've found). i just don't know if the reduced survivability is worth it (yet).

yea, i totaly agree with you and the naming. keep doing ur best man

Sure. Would look fine, I bet. I'm only speaking from personal experience with using hydrogen. It runs out too fast, especially if you're doing a consistent burn, as is often required in combat maneuvers. I find that using it as the sole source of propulsion leaves something to be desired.

like i said, i'm looking for people (literally anyone to comment in this section) to provide me actual data in dogfights and whatnot because i don't have the chance to come across it (i usually don't multiplayer).

i'm currently prototyping a light-armored variant. gonna see how that turns out.

Makes sense. It's a beautiful fighter but it doesn't seem very maneuverable in a combat setting. Seems more like a scout.

@Abyzmi, okay, with the Block I Upgrade, it'll take around 550x6 ice to hit full speed (same amount to stop) without changing direction. 6000x6 will give you enough for 5 start-stops (the stored hydrogen in the tank is not taken into account).

without the upgrade you can expect more start/stops due to less weight, but it'll be slower overall without the tank and large thruster.

@Abyzmi, like i said, the fuel really depends on how much ice you have.

with the default 6K ice and no hydrogen tank, you should be able to accelerate to full speed, and stop again a good number of times. the key is to avoid using dampeners. i'll test out how much ice it takes to accelerate and come to you with that.

Cool build, but did you actually try to fly it for long in survival? Seems like it would run out of fuel rapidly what with all of the hydrogen thrusters.
